spy Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Hi,I am looking for a hotel in New York City from 19 to 22 October, ideally 3.5* plus.I've got a cancellable booking at Pod39 for a total of $673 which I think would work out at about $185 a night on price line (before tax etc.).I am looking for somewhere around midtown ideally but would consider other central areas (Chelsea, Tribecca etc).Has anyone got any advice on whether I should be looking to bid now or wait until nearer the time? The best option at the moment for the whole period on Priceline express deals is $228 for MTE so much more expensive than my backup.I've noticed if I split the booking in two then I could get a 3.5* financial district for $187 for one night on 19 October and then a 4* MTW for $150 a night for the other two nights. Does this sound like a good deal or would I be better waiting (for either or both)? Thanks,Steve.
thereuare Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Welcome to BetterBidding! Is your room at the Pod with a private or shared bathroom? What is it about that Pod that you're trying to improve upon? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. spy Posted October 6, 2013 Author Report Posted October 6, 2013 Hi,Thanks for the reply. It is a private bathroom. I am just trying to find somewhere a bit cheaper and with a slightly bigger room!
thereuare Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Do you want to bid up to $185 for your complete stay before considering SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID?Should we only include 'central' area for the first round of bidding or are other zones acceptable as well? Please list, by PRICELINE name, the zones that you want to include in your first round of bidding and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.PS- if you intend to include CPS in your bidding you may want to exclude this zone from your bidding since it contains the Hudson Hotel which has notoriously small rooms, and you mention above one of your goals is a larger room then you currently have. spy Posted October 6, 2013 Author Report Posted October 6, 2013 Thanks for the reply. If it is likely that prices will drop closer to the time of my stay then I would prefer not to go as high as $185 now as it would be better to keep my options open with the pod booking if I was still going to pay a similar amount. Although I mentioned the room size the main reason for wanting to find something else is if I can save some money! The reason I was considering splitting is because the midtown hotels seem to expensive on the Saturday night but then cheaper on the other two days.I would probably be willing to pay up to $175 for the whole stay at the moment to avoid the inconvenience of moving hotels. As I would only be saving $30 over the pod hotel I think I would want to restrict to the following zones at this price:- Midtown West- Times Square - Theatre District- Midtown EastIf I was to consider other areas then I would probably want to bid lower but would consider staying in the SoHo - Tribecca or Lower East Side areas.
thereuare Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 Using your criteria above i would bid as follows over the next two days (although i think your chances would be better if you included more zones, which can still be centrally located, such as MSG, Chelsea, and/or ESB):Select 3.5* MTW...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* TS...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* MTE...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* MTW and TS...Bid $150, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* MTW and TS...Bid $150, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* MTE and MTW...Bid $155, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* MTE and MTW, and TS...Bid $160If the above is rejected wait 24 hours and re-try, once again starting with a PRICELINE link on this board (and not any links in any emails that PRICELINE may send indicating that you're eligible to bid again):Select 3.5* MTW...Bid $165, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* TS...Bid $165, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* MTE...Bid $165, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* MTW and TS...Bid $170, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* MTW and TS...Bid $170, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* MTE and MTW...Bid $173, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* MTE and MTW, and TS...Bid $175Any questions feel free to ask. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. I expanded to include CPS too to give myself more rebids but got up to $165 with no success yet so will try again in 24 hours.Do prices normally go up or down the closer you get to the date of the stay?
AaronJB Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 There is no way to know - this is discussed in the FAQ in detail. I will note that this is not a slow period of the year in NYC. Rates have also gone up overall over the last few years (and there have been less instances of "very last minute" price declines.)Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
