Priceline Hotel: Please help: NYC in December

I agree completely with many forum members about the prices skyrocketing in December. I visited the Ace Hotel in March and paid about a third of what is being asked for the same room in December.

I will be visiting from 10 - 16 December and looking for some advice on rooms please. Ideally I am looking to stick to the cheaper end at around $160 per night and have noticed a few lower end places on Manhattan at this price. I'm quite laid back in that I really just need a bed and a private bathroom. However I'll be willing to pay more for better quality if it represents good value and wondered if anyone had any suggestions on how to blag either a decent room on Manhattan or a fantastic room with a view on Brooklyn for around the $200 mark. I appreciate this might not be doable however thought I would ask.
