You're right. 4/5 for the 4.5*

Which hotel do you recommend?

I'm celebrating my birthday with friends (early 20's). We're going to be going to a few bars in River North area and will be staying the night at a hotel in the city.

Do you have any suggestions for bars?

If the second hotel is the W, do you think that will be too far from River North area?

Also, what are the chances of them upgrading me to a nicer room(possibly small suite) at either of these hotels? I stayed at the Ivy Boutique last year for my birthday and also booked through hotwire and they upgraded me to a very nice suite.

I'm sure AaronJB will answer your additional questions, but can you please follow-up your Hotwire Las Vegas thread with whatever you ended up doing for that trip. Ideally each thread on the board would have a 'conclusion' (if PRICELINE or HOTWIRE wasn't used and the trip was canceled, booked direct, etc) as this helps keep the board better organized and is a courtesy to anyone who took the time to help with your stay.

Thanks.

Both have pros/cons: If you're a group of 20-somethings, the W is likely to be more appealing from a boutique/style standpoint. The W Lakeshore also has a Bliss Spa and - as with all W properties - something of a trendy/nightlife scene in its lobby at night.

However, it's a longer walk to the River North area.

The Intercontinental is a neat older property (although not entirely old, it certainly has modern touches) with a cool history and a gorgeous historic pool (although it's an enormous lap pool mostly used for those looking for exercise.)

The Intercontinental is still a bit of a stroll to River North, but it's closer than the W.

All that said, if you're staying out way late, you may want to take a taxi - and in that case, the W really isn't that much more of a ride at all vs the Intercontinental. During the day/early evening, it's a very nice walk from the W to the River North area.

If you like the look and style of the W, then it's not that much more of a ride back from River North than it is to the Intercontinental. If you don't like the look of the W, I'd go with the Intercontinental, which is pretty much the same price.

Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
