ChillEDog Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 Our travel is obviously a ways off, and I'm not even ready to bid yet (waiting for a new credit card that will give me AA points) so maybe it is too soon to ask. This room is for my stepsons, 21 and 18, who will fly up to join their mother and I 12-24 thru 12-27. We are staying midtown east so I am thinking that area, ESB or TS. But further out is ok (but in Manhattan) because they're pretty good at the subway. But close to us would make meeting up easiest. If I look now I see Hotwire and Priceline deals for 3* starting at $140 (not many but there are one or two) and more in the $155+ range. So I'm hoping I can get a 3* or better, maybe $125-135/night ? I guess the 3* floor makes it tough as far as rebid zones, since most have 3*. Hopefully this is realistic. Any guidance greatly appreciated. Thank you.
AaronJB Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 This period is in-between one of the busiest of the year (around 11/25-12/15) and one of the most expensive (NYE). While rates have moved higher over the last few years, this is traditionally a slower period.I would avoid TS - it's generally the most expensive area in NYC. At the 4* level, you're likely looking at the $125-135 range (although I'd start lower) in MTE, with other midtown zone/s likely being at least mildly more expensive. At the 3.5* level, keep in mind that some properties in MTE are towards the far E border of the zone and somewhat out of the way.Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
ChillEDog Posted August 12, 2013 Author Report Posted August 12, 2013 A lot of helpful insight in your post, thank you. One thing I take from it is to bid even lower than planned. No sense in wasting a 4* hotel on 3* boys ! <g> I will use the link here come bid-time. Thanks again.
thereuare Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 Just let us know once you're ready to bid, as rates can (and likely) will change between now and the time you're ready to bid.At that time you can confirm which zone(s) and star rating you'd like to bid for and we will suggest a strategy to follow inline with your maximum bid amount. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board. ChillEDog Posted August 18, 2013 Author Report Posted August 18, 2013 So, I'm ready to bid, MTE per your suggestion, and any other zones you suggest, but not TS, again per your suggestion. The boys' mom and I will be staying Affinia Shelburne, roughly 36/Lex (or possibly One UN). Or should I wait until closer to our travel time in December ? If I can snag a room now, at $135/night, which is do-able I think, that sure does sound like a good deal. That is why I'm willing to bid now. Thanks for any advice.
AaronJB Posted August 18, 2013 Report Posted August 18, 2013 I think you're probably looking at $125-135 in ESB, although you have the time to start at $90 and work higher by $5's.Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches..
ChillEDog Posted August 18, 2013 Author Report Posted August 18, 2013 Thanks. Tried 90 3.5* ESB, then 95 3.5* ESB, MTE, then lowered to 3* same zones/amount, no joy. Will try again later. Frankly if I eventually get $125-135 I'm thrilled. Thanks.
thereuare Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 You could lock-in a 4* hotel in the MTE zone for $135 or less right now...Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. has a 4* hotel in the MTE zone with:Free Internet Restaurant Business Center Fitness Center The price is $148/nite but the discount link code in my signature will give you 10% off, making this the equivalent of a $133/nite bid price... you could bid for a 4* up to this amount and if rejected take the PRICELINE EXPRESS deal. Does that work for your needs and budget? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. ChillEDog Posted August 19, 2013 Author Report Posted August 19, 2013 Thank you. That is tempting but I am a little concerned about getting old wing of One UN. Kind of tough call 'cuz its for my boys and they'd probably not even care. Also, sort of hoping to get them ESB, we stayed there before and they liked it a lot. So going to bid a little more, try to get ESB, any idea how long this offer lasts ? Thank you.
AaronJB Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 One UN was last reported at the 3.5* level on HOTWIRE (that may have changed since the last time, but the last report was at 3.5*.) There is no set time period with HOTWIRE listings, it's a matter of inventory and how fast inventory goes (the deal may be available until your trip, it may be gone tomorrow.)Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 I don't think the 4* PRICELINE EXPRESS MTE property would be the One UN New York since that property is currently 7.8/10.0 on PRICELINE (see rating HERE) and the PRICELINE EXPRESS offer at $148 shows a minimum user review rating of 8.0/10.0. I don't know how often this information is updated by PRICELINE, but i think you would have a very good argument should this turn out to be the One UN New York (or any other hotel that is not currently 8.0 or better rated by PRICELINE's previous users)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know whatever you decide or how we can be of further help. ChillEDog Posted August 20, 2013 Author Report Posted August 20, 2013 So I tried the 10% off PRICELINE EXPRESS deal, the only thing I saw MTE was 7.0 for $151. The 7.0 scared me. So I went back to bidding, a lot of permutations starting at $125 MTE, ESB, TS, $5 increments, finally got W New York on Lexington at $140/night 12-24 to 12-27, and I added a night. I used the PRICELINE link hear. THANK YOU for all the advice and feedback.
