gosndav Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 I'm looking for bidding advice for a 4.5* in Soho-Tribeca, 9/10/2013-9/12/2013. I'm looking for the best hotel / star rating for my budget. Dates are firm. This is only my second trip to NYC and I'm not very familiar with the area, but would be willing to expand my bid area to include Downtown-Financial District and Chelsea if that would increase my odds of winning. I'd like to keep the total under $225/night. Does this seem reasonable? Thanks so much for the help! Looking forward to a successful bid on PRICELINE.

gosndav Posted August 6, 2013 Author Report Posted August 6, 2013 Check and check. Thanks for taking a look!
thereuare Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 At $225 all-in your maximum bid price is ~$195/nite, and unfortunately at current prices i don't think this will even be enough for a 4* hotel in one of the zones you have listed above. If you search for your dates at MAPS and HOTELS.com (try using a 1 or 3 mile radius since there are so many hotels in NYC... then only look at hotels that are 4* and above by UNCHECKING the other star ratings)... what is the best price you're able to find for a 4* or better hotel in midtown or the lower Manhattan zones that you're considering? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. gosndav Posted August 6, 2013 Author Report Posted August 6, 2013 The least expensive 4.5* downtown is $485. In midtown it's $503.For a 4* downtown it's $377 and in midtown it's just about the same ($379).For a 3.5* downtown it's $341 and in midtown it's just about the same ($339).
thereuare Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 So as you can see current rates are (very) high for your dates which is indicative of high demand, and while higher rates mean higher margins for hotels, in such situations they are not likely to discount as much (even thought their margins are higher) as they would prefer to try to sell rooms on their own at full price rather than offer deep discounts to the opaque suppliers. We can try for whatever you'd like, but i think your objective of a 4.5* hotel (or even a 4*) at $195 or less may not be realistic at this point in time. For a 4* hotel in one what is generally considered a central location i think you're likely looking at the $230-$250.As i said, we can try whatever star ratings and maximum bid price you'd like, but i think you're likely looking in the low-mid $200's for a 4* hotel.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. gosndav Posted August 13, 2013 Author Report Posted August 13, 2013 I'd like to try for a 4* in Soho-Tribeca, or Downtown-Financial District, or Chelsea for maximum $225/night. If that doesn't work, I'll try dropping the star rating to 3.5*. Thanks!
thereuare Posted August 13, 2013 Report Posted August 13, 2013 When bidding 4* in NYC you have TWO re-bid zones. gosndav Posted August 19, 2013 Author Report Posted August 19, 2013 Used the PRICELINE link. Tried all those combinations and no bites! I'm considering lowering my star rating to 3.5, but a quick review shows that all zones in NYC have hotels in that range. How does re-bidding work then? Thanks!
AaronJB Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 Unfortunately, when all zones have a particular star rating there are no re-bid opportunities. Keep in mind in MTE there are a couple of possibilities towards the far E border of the zone and the Hudson (3.5* in CPS) has particularly (even for NYC) small rooms.Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
