Priceline Hotel: Amsterdam Pricing

Going to be in Amsterdam at the beginning of September as part of a trip, new to the whole bidding action. What's a realistic bid for 3* in City Centre?

I see the median price is rather high, but I've also been seeing on the forum that people are snagging $65 rooms in August.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated as I'm a huge newbie.

Thanks.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Rates are date specific so you won't always be able to replicate another win from the board when your dates are different then your own.

At the 3* level you're likely looking at the $100 area... would this be within your expected budget?

I'll point out that you may be able to get a 4* hotel for about the same or not much more than this... if the $100 area is acceptable, would you want to try for a 4* hotel first up to your maximum bid OR is your goal the least expensive 3* or better for this trip? Are you to begin bidding now?

Apologies for that first reply. Didn't realize I had actually sent it by accident.

I am really looking for the lowest price possible. I just want somewhere that washes the sheets, and has a bathroom in the room. I thought 2* would be more like a hostel setting so I'd like to go 3*. My budget is very low at least for this section of my trip. I'd like to get in the $65 range, so I'm definitely in the least expensive 3* range even in the 2* range if necessary.

I tried out some bids yesterday. 50/55/60 for City Centre, North, East, and Canal Areas of Amsterdam. Nothing came back. Those bids may be a little unrealistic though.

I can also move my area of stay because we don't mind walking or using public transit, etc.

Thanks for the welcome! This looks like a great tool.

Is there good transportation from the Airport to City Centre? If so, airport zones often offer some of the cheapest rates in a given region. For example, PRICELINE EXPRESS has a 4* hotel in the Airport zone for only $52, but you'll have to research it first to see if there is public transportation offered from the airport area to City Centre.

Even then, when factoring transportation costs, you'll need to decide if worth the savings. If for example transportation will cost you $5(US) each way per person, and you're two people (i'm not sure if you're traveling solo or not), that is $20 RT per day in transportation costs... now the savings (vs. the approximately $100 i suspect it would take for a more centrally located 3* hotel) is about $25 and is $25 savings per day worth the hassle spending your vacation time commuting each day? (i'm not saying it is or it isn't, as it depends upon what your needs/goals are and just how firm your budget is)

To the OP

What ever you do try not to settle for the airport. It's a sterile wasteland. Go for CenterCity Zone or Central Canal Zone. It's worth paying a few dollars more. Trust me on this one.

My advice is to skip the 3 stars for Amsterdam. We have seen very few won and those that have been won seem over priced compared to the 4s. A last resort IMO.

I follow Amsterdam bidding and we have seen a spate of $55 to $65 dollar wins recently for 4 stars. Amazing considering how expensive Amsterdam hotels are.

But early Sept looks like a more expensive time frame. The last of the summer and the dreaded IBC around the 11th or 12th or so.

You want to avoid the IBC. Google the exact dates. It runs about a week.

I am going to say that you will not hit $65 for a 4. Not for early Sept.

But I would not be surprised to see a win under $80 USD. Maybe $75?

My old 2 star a tiny single room that I used to book direct now costs 63 euros inc tax .

A double room in that 2 star booked direct with go for 90 or 95 euros a night.

Less than $100 USD for a 4 star double via bidding is a steal.

Good Luck

In case this helps: I just failed with a bid of 66USD for 2* and 3* in Amsterdam North + Rembrandpark (I wanted the free parking).

I think I'll go for a B&B instead.

cafc7,

Thanks for the post, but assuming your dates are different then the OP's, what it may take to be successful for your dates may have little to do with what bid prices are needed for the dates above.

Hague-man for early September? The European Society of Cardiology congress is held in Amsterdam from the 31rst of August until the 4th of September (couple of thousand participants) which means that getting a low price is close to impossible.

Hague-man,

Thanks for your post.

Can you please add your win to the board as a NEW TOPIC so that others will be aware of your win when searching the topic titles on the board and in the Priceline and Hotwire Calendar of Wins and Priceline Maps.

In your post please include the star rating, city, zone, hotel name, room rate per nite, and dates of your stay... you can still view all of this information by going to PRICELINE and clicking the MY PROFILE >> MY TRIPS link near the top right of their home page.

Please also read your messages and use the requested PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your future bidding, searches, and travel purchases.
