I am currently bidding on Priceline for February 2014 for 4* or 5* in the Tsim Sha Tsui area, my most recent bid (rejected) was $125 and I am wondering whether I am more likely to get a better price if I wait until December or January to bid. Does anybody have any experience or knowledge on this that they can share.

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

While I generally recommend starting to do research and make initial bids in advance, this is definitely quite a ways out and you have time. What would be your desired max bid per night for this stay?

Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

My top bid would be $140 USD as I can currently get it on hotwire for $155 CDN however, I was hoping to go no higher than $125 USD for a 4*

At the moment, based upon your previously rejected bid, that $125 is not enough for a 4* hotel in this zone... nobody can say if rates will come down, or move even higher, between now and your stay. However, it looks like the HOTWIRE property has gone up a little since you last checked as current the 4* hotel i'm seeing in this zone is priced at $166/nite (and PRICELINE EXPRESS at $183/nite)

You do have plenty of time but your options basically come down to:

  • you can wait it out and hope for lower rates in the weeks ahead
  • lower your star rating
  • increase your budget
  • SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID
  • include other nearby zones

I finished up changing locations to Hong Kong Island in the Central district and booking at the Hotel Edge, initially I booked a standard room at a cost of $75.44 CDN a night but on arriving and seeing the room I upgraded to a larger room (50% larger) with a view across to Kowloon. My final cost was $121.81 a night including breakfast.

Thanks for the follow-up.

Was this purchase thru PRICELINE, HOTWIRE, or a hotel direct purchase where you knew the name beforehand?

If PRICELINE or HOTWIRE, can you please confirm the details of your purchase including star rating, city, zone, hotel name, room rate per nite, dates of your stay, and (if HOTWIRE) the amenities shown before your purchase. (you can still view this information by going to HOTWIRE or PRICELINE and using the profile links on the top right of their home pages)

Please remember to follow-up your threads with your wins/decisions as you make them (even if you don't ultimately use PRICELINE / HOTWIRE, cancel the trip, book direct, etc) as this help keep the board better organized and more useful for everyone... as well as being a courtesy to anyone who took the time to help with your travel plans.

Thanks.
