JLam Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Hi there,I'm looking to visit San Fran between Aug 3-6. We don't plan to rent a car so hope to stay in the Union Square West/East area, Financial District - but open to suggestions for other areas.I hope to find something 3.5* to 4* for around $120-150 a night - is this realistic? Many thanks in advance.
thereuare Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Welcome to BetterBidding! The upper end of your budget is in the right ballpark for a 3.5*, but i also wouldn't be surprised if it took a little more than this... although you can likely get a 3* property in the $150 area.Did you want to first try for a 4* up to your limit, then if rejected try for a 3.5*... or is the goal the least expensive 3.5* or better for this trip?We will of course suggest a strategy that starts low and gradually works your way higher, so can you extend your maximum bid at all or did you want to keep it at $150 for the time being? (and then if not successful you can decide to increase or try for a 3* property)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. JLam Posted July 14, 2013 Author Report Posted July 14, 2013 Thanks for the speedy response. My goal would be to get 3.5* at the lowest possible price within my budget. I have not started bidding yet as I want to figure out my strategy before starting. Thanks.
thereuare Posted July 15, 2013 Report Posted July 15, 2013 When bidding 3.5* in San Francisco you have FIVE re-bid zones available. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 3.5* USE and Financial...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* USW...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 3.5* USE and Financial and USW...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $148, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150Any questions feel free to ask. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. JLam Posted July 17, 2013 Author Report Posted July 17, 2013 Thanks for your help.I followed the strategy and bidded all the way u to $165 with no luck. Also tried the same for 3* for USE only. With the taxes and fees, the total cost is just not making sense, even with the 5% disocunt. I end up paying just a little more at Expedia and purchased something that is refundable up to 2 days before. I will give it some more tries sporatically over the next few days and see if anything else comes up.Thanks again for your help.
thereuare Posted July 17, 2013 Report Posted July 17, 2013 What property, and for what price, did you book as a back-up?If you didn't, please check for and use the board links in the Support Page for your non-opaque purchases, where we have links to most of the major hotel chains and online booking agencies, including Expedia.Thanks. JLam Posted July 19, 2013 Author Report Posted July 19, 2013 I booked the Stanford Court at an ave of $204CAD a night - total with tax it comes to $967CADWhen my bidding got to $160, Priceline "suggested" I increase my price to $244 (excl fees). I gave it one more try at $165 with no luck and thats when i gave up.I did try again today, same criteria and price and the "suggested" price came down to $220 - still more than what my back up plan is.If you have any other suggestions, please do share them. Thanks!
AaronJB Posted July 20, 2013 Report Posted July 20, 2013 Keep in mind that the actual required price may be much closer to your last bid than the "suggested" counter-offer. I'd continue to go up by $3-5 at a time.Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
JLam Posted July 20, 2013 Author Report Posted July 20, 2013 Thanks. Will keep on trying. I actually found another back up with a corporate discount, at the Hilton fisherman's wharf for $159 plus taxes. It's not the area I have in mind but at this price I'm willing to compromise.
