Priceline Hotel: First Timer Help 9/23 - 9/30

Hello,

I've been reviewing this board for awhile now and am looking for assistance on bidding in NYC. I have never bid on Priceline before but have heard you can get some great deals.

My husband and I will be traveling to NYC 9/23 - 9/30. I am hopping to stay at around $200 or under per night for a 4 star hotel. I have some ideas of where I would like to stay (Upper West Side, Chelsea, Tribeca, Midtown) but please feel free to suggest others that may meet my requirements. I don't care to stay in Times Square, and central is not necessarily a requirement as long as there is good subway access.

Is this price point realistic for the areas? Should I start bidding now? Any other areas to suggest? Any assistance is much appreciated!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Unless you can get a deal in the UWS zone i wouldn't include that at the onset since that area is a bit less convenient then the others that you have mentioned. For the most part we typically recommend midtown due to its central location (but if you're not necessarily choosing a location based upon convenience then what is the criteria you're using to determine your zones) and then consider more Downtown locations if the lower price is worth the less convenient location.

Unfortunately you're traveling during the first few weeks of high season (but the upside is that the weather is usually great) and at current rates you might have a chance at 4* hotel in the Downtown zones, but in terms of your other areas you're more likely looking in the $250/nite area.

Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option? Rates in NYC area usually less expensive Fri-Mon and more expensive Mon-Fri... you may be able to get something for the last 3-4 nites of your stay within your current $200 budget, then try to fill-in the remaining nites in the weeks/months ahead.

Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there.

Thanks so much for your feedback! I did read the messages and would am happy to use the links provided.

It sounds like $250 is more of a reasonable rate and I am fine with that if that's the case.

When we travel, we are typically willing to sacrifice a bit of convenience for a better price, less touristy area. It would be great if we could find a good balance. I had read that UWS and UES are less touristy which is why I considered them as an option. However, I looked at the zoning maps and now I understand how that might be risky due to they extend pretty far north and there is no guarantee what area of the zone we could get.

Based on your suggestions, I'd be willing to try the midtown locations, and then head further downtown. Looks like there is better subway access heading south. Also, I would prefer to avoid splitting the bid.

Besides UWS and UES extending too far north, getting to the eastside from the UWS zone can be a hassle via mass transit, and vice-versa getting to the westside from the UES.

I also think the UN may be in session during your trip, which if correct, is another reason for the very high rates for your dates.

Please confirm that you're willing to accept all of the following zones (and confirm any zones where we have added a caveat):

CPS

Chelsea (extends a little far west so subway may be 10+ minutes away, but it's a fairly new 'hot area' that is in favor right now. What you get up in proximity to the subway is that i think it's an area that sounds like you may enjoy, as it's more 'locals' then 'tourists' (except when walking the HighLine) with a lot of local cafes, restaurants, etc. as well as the Chelsea Market)

Downtown (should we include this now or only if/when other midtown zones have failed)

ESB

MSG

MTE

MTW

Soho

TS (you said you wanted to avoid, but this may offer the best deal/rates for your dates. Usually we hear from users who ONLY want to stay in Times Square, and while i'm like you and tend to avoid the touristy areas, my advice is to generally to not avoid this area, but also not focus on this zone only. Yes it's touristy, but once you leave your hotel you can head east or west (to one of the near by Avenues) instead of walking north/south and quickly be away from most of the tourists. Of course your stay and you know your needs/wants best so it's up to you if you want to include this zone or not)

Let us know your zone thoughts, or additional questions, and we'll take it from there.

I agree with all your zones below. Let's only include Downtown once the Midtown areas have failed. Also, I agree with on Times Square. Since it's our first time, might as well try to be as centrally located as possible.

As an update I've been up to $228 using the strategy posted for the past two days, all rejected.

I will probably wait a few more weeks since I feel I might be too early for my travel dates to get a good deal.

Do you think it would be safe to also include 3.5* hotels?

Posted

The issue with 3.5* in CPS is that the Hudson is a possibility and that property has very small (140-150 sq ft-ish) rooms. There are also a couple of properties at the 3.5* level in MTE that are far east within the MTE zone.

You do have some time so I wouldn't rush, but at the same time, this is not (at least traditionally) a slow period in NYC, so I would be moderately persistent in trying to get something locked in.

Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
