Priceline Hotel: Failed bids for Oceanside/Carlsbad

3*: I stopped bidding at $95/night, and I'm bidding 2 days before my departure, for a Wednesday check-in and Sunday check-out.

Of the 3-star hotels in the San Diego Hotel list, here were the lowest rates per night I could find, along with what that rate would be with a (60% discount, 50% discount, and 40% discount):

Marriott Courtyard Carlsbad: $175 ($70, $88, $105)

Carlsbad by the Sea Resort: $149 ($60, $75, $89)

Holiday Inn Oceanside - Marina: $265 ($106, $133, $159)

Marriott Residence Inn Carlsbad: $195 ($78, $98, $117)

My cancelable backup information is as follows:

Extended Stay America, Oceanside (Looks like a 2* according to the San Diego Hotel List)

Total cost: $426.45 for 4 nights = $106.61/night.

Booked May 19, 2013. Can cancel up until 6 PM Tuesday Jul 2.

Pretty disappointing.

Thursday is a holiday and many families may be making it into a long weekend and traveling to the area... if hotels area at or near full occupancy, or expect a fair amount of 'walk-in traffic' as some families may make a last minute decision to travel based upon weather, finances, other plans, etc, then there is little reason for hotels to discount as deeply as you're expecting.

Given your back-up rate at a 2* hotel for $106/nite, is a 3* hotel not worth any additional expense over the cost of the 2*? Also, your current back-up hotel is currently sold-out for your dates, which if this trend is consistent across the board for all hotels in the area, would imply that demand got stronger over the last 2 weeks since you booked this back-up... perhaps a $95 bid would have been enough for a 3* hotel a few weeks ago before some hotels in the area started to sell-out.
