For the 3* hotel I'm not currently seeing this property offered when searching HOTWIRE for your dates... are you still seeing the above on your own search? If so, are you searching HOTWIRE for more than one room or for more than the default 2adults/0children?

For the 2* my best guess for this one would be the Mayfair New York Hotel.

I'll also add that you don't really need to stay directly in Times Square as you'll likely be paying a premium price for a lower quality hotel to do so, and with NYC so compact and mass transit easily accessible, most midtown zones are just as convenient and provide a much better value.

I know the hotel rooms are tiny, but I just really want the convenience of walking 2 blocks to Broadway and a few blocks to Rockefeller. We have cruised numerous times and are fine with cramped quarters.
