DRJV Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Hi there! My boyfriend and I would like to go to NYC from September 4th-8th and I was wondering if you could help me with a Priceline bidding strategy.More details:3.5+ star, CPS, CA, ESBA, HK, MSG, ME, MW, TSWe will be driving. I know very few hotels in the downtown core have free parking, but as cheap as possible (if this is even possible!) would be great. Questions:What would a doable rate be?We are not dead set on the dates, but a Wednesday to a Sunday in September is ideal. Are there other weeks in September that might be cheaper? When should we start bidding? Thanks in advance!
AaronJB Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)The only hotel that I know of in NYC that has cheap parking is the Skyline, and the only free that I can think of is the Travel Inn, both lower end properties and both in an area that isn't as densely built. Otherwise, 3/4* hotel parking is going to vary but in many cases be pretty expensive (for example, parking at the Holiday Inn 57th is $27, parking at some 4*'s is $45-50 or higher.) Unfortunately, September also starts to get expensive for hotel rates. What would be your desired budget per night/star rating?Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
DRJV Posted June 2, 2013 Author Report Posted June 2, 2013 Thank you for your response!Ideally, around 150-170/night including parking. As for star level, as long as the hotel is clean with no bed bugs and is somewhere with great access to subways (and more central than, say, upper east and west sides), then we are easy. I figure this would be, at the lowest, 3.5 stars...?
thereuare Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 At current rates for the dates posted your budget is not likely realistic, especially when trying to include parking.Hotel parking can often run $45-$60/nite, but fortunately you have other options at private garages where you can likely get parking closer to ~$25-$30/day. However, even at $20 day things brings your budget down to $130-$150, which at this time won't be enough for the dates posted. Not sure if it will help much at this time, but if you can push the trip back a week and come over Labor Day Weekend that might help as hotel's don't have business travelers during this time which can often lower hotel rates due to the lower demand. Also, if you let us know from where you are traveling from there may be other options as far as parking/driving... you could park at a train station Park N Ride outside of the Manhattan and take the train or bus into the city, paying substantially less to park your vehicle for the 4 days of your trip. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know your thoughts on the above and we'll take it from there. DRJV Posted June 2, 2013 Author Report Posted June 2, 2013 You guys are so helpful. Thank you!We can definitely push the trip back to labour day weekend. We could go from Thursday - Labour Day Monday not a problem. We are coming from Toronto. What would be a more realistic budget?
thereuare Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 Even for the holiday weekend rates are somewhat high for this time of year as we have not see a rate drop for most summer dates yet.Currently i thinking you're likely looking in the $160-$180 range for a 3.5* or better hotel, but i wouldn't chase this one at the moment, and instead find a back-up hotel that is fully refundable up until a few days before your purchase. This protects you from rates rising from here, but also gives you the ability to take advantage of any drop in rates which may occur down the road (which no guarantees it will happen, but hopefully will based upon it being a holiday weekend and the slower summer season)You can try our sister site MAPS and HOTELS.com to find something that may be acceptable as a back-up reservation, but be sure to read the cancellation terms, as not all hotels and/or rates are fully refundable. If you want to begin bidding now let us know the maximum bid to use for the zones above and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. DRJV Posted June 2, 2013 Author Report Posted June 2, 2013 Oh my...Is it better to use PRICELINE so far in advance, or is it best to wait a few days before the trip? I have used Priceline before and am asking out of curiosity. I suppose we can start at 145 and up that rate from there...**EDIT**: We just want something clean and a great location (ie. in the areas I listed above). Would a 3* hotel suffice? Room space isn't a huge deal. All we need is a bed and a bathroom. And no bed bugs...
AaronJB Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 Timing is discussed in the FAQ in greater detail. This is traditionally not a terribly busy time of year (although it starts to ramp up not long after), but hotels have been discounting less aggressively than 3-4 years ago and while a last minute decrease in price is possible it's definitely not guaranteed. I would try to get something acceptable (especially a refundable reservation that can be cancelled if something else comes along) sooner. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
DRJV Posted June 2, 2013 Author Report Posted June 2, 2013 Thanks very much! We really appreciate all the help here. If you can post bidding tips to allow us to bid multiple times (on a 3*+ hotel), that would be great. We will book a hotel that we can cancel in the meantime. :)
thereuare Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 I suppose we can start at 145 and up that rate from there...So we don't suggest a strategy that goes higher then you're willing to pay, what would be your maximum bid at this point in time? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
thereuare Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 You could get a 4* hotel for less than $200/nite... did you want to try for the highest rated hotel within your budget OR the least expensive 3* or better for this trip? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
DRJV Posted June 3, 2013 Author Report Posted June 3, 2013 The latter, please. Are 3* hotels clean with relatively comfortable beds? We don't need anything too fancy. If 3*s fit the bill, then go with 3*s. If not, then 3.5*+, please. :)
thereuare Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 Disappointments can happen at any star level, but 3* properties are generally fine, although sometimes there can be a hotel that may not be as good as the others in the star class. To confirm the dates, are you now bidding for 8/29-9/1?Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
