I'm hoping someone can help me out with a bidding strategy. I'm looking for a hotel in Midtown East for Aug 29- Sept 2, 2013. No lower than 3* and my max amount is $200 (for now). Much appreciated.

At the moment a 4* hotel at under $200/nite shouldn't be a problem... are you looking for the highest star rated hotel within your budget OR do you prefer a less expensive 3* hotel?

Is MTE the only zone you're willing to accept for this stay OR do you want to include others to give more hotels the opportunity to accept your bid price (which can help get the lowest price possible)

I would prefer a less expensive 3*. Ideally the Lexington (we're attending a wedding there, with a baby) but I know there are no guarantees. MTE is the only zone that I'm willing to accept. How should I proceed?

Before bidding, note that HOTWIRE has a 3.5* hotel in the MTE zone for $179/nite with:

While as you point out there are no guarantees, this matches previous reports for the Lexington and that would be my best guess for this one.

Do you want to go with this HOTWIRE offer since it looks to be the hotel that would work perfectly for your needs... or do you want to try bidding on PRICELINE where you could receive any hotel in the zone at the star level (or higher) that you bid?

Thanks so much for this! I think I'll go with this offer. I noticed that I have been slow to the draw and the price is now $189. Do you think I should check back often to the site to see if it goes back down? And of course, I'll go through your HOTWIRE link.

As this is the hotel you want and it works out so well for your plans, i only focus on whether the current price offered is a good deal or not relative to booking direct (or vs. what price you might be able to get for some 'other' hotel that may not work out as well for your needs).

Given how perfect this hotel is for your plans, the greater risk (imo) then the price changing would be if this hotel is no longer offered and replaced with a different property.

You're also near my often recommended Ess-A-Bagel (Third Ave at 51st St) which has one of the best bagels in the city, makes for a nice, and relatively inexpensive, breakfast among local NYers.
