d_s_ng Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 Hi - new to this site - we're also looking for a 4 star, but my wife prefers the Soho/tribeca area. Just found your forum yesterday. Budget ideally <$200/night, May 22-May 26th. I think I understand re-bidding, in that I've been choosing Soho first, made a bid. If rejected, added Long Island, and made a new bid, then if rejected, added Harlem, and made a final bid.Is this the right approach? I've gone up to 210 with no luck. Any suggestions would be great! Many thanks,- Doug
thereuare Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 Rates for your dates int the Soho-Tribeca zone are more expensive then elsewhere in the city... is this the only location you're willing to accept?Using MAPS and HOTELS.com what is the best rate you're able to find at an acceptable 4* hotel in this zone? At current rates i think you're likely looking at $240-$260+ for a 4* hotel in this area, where a more centrally located midtown 4* hotel may be had for closer to, or under, the $200 mark.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. d_s_ng Posted May 18, 2013 Author Report Posted May 18, 2013 Thanks for the speedy reply!I'm not too familiar with New York, but my wife is also ok with Chelsea or Central Park South (besides Soho/Tribeca)Does this help? Thanks in advance,- Doug
thereuare Posted May 18, 2013 Report Posted May 18, 2013 Few points...Just noticed in your topic title that you're 2adults/1child (14months)... PRICELINE only guarantees double occupancy, while you'll technically be triple occupancy. While this isn't usually an issue with a baby so young, many NYC hotels are notoriously small and the odds of only one bed in the room are high (and possibly no room for a crib/Pak N Play)... is this a risk you're willing to accept?HOTWIRE on the otherhand allows you to search for up to quad occupancy, but asks that you include the number of adults and children that are 2+ years old. Therefore, you could technically search for 2adults/0children (since adding a 3rd person may increase the rate) and still correctly be within HOTWIRE's terms since you didn't include the baby in your search (since under 2 yeas old). If you did run into a problem at the hotel with there being triple occupancy, you could then have HOTWIRE help rectify the situation since you did search as per their instructions, whereas the same issue with PRICELINE you'd be more 'on your own' since they indicate all rooms are only guaranteed for double occupancy.Lastly, we can move forward with whichever zones you'd like, but i think MTE may offer some of the best pricing at the 4* level for your dates (i think the zone is fine, but you should speak to your wife to determine if this area suits your needs for this trip or not).Let us know your thoughts on the PRICELINE/HOTWIRE/occupancy issue and how you'd like to proceed, and if with PRICELINE, let us know your maximum bid and confirm the zones you're willing to accept. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. d_s_ng Posted May 18, 2013 Author Report Posted May 18, 2013 Yeah - I was actually a bit annoyed that Priceline wasn't more kid friendly, but we looked and there are several places in new york you can rent a crib for reasonable rates if worst came to worst.Your points about MTE are well taken - so why not expand to MTE, as well as soho/chelsea/central park south. Thanks a ton!- Doug

d_s_ng Posted May 20, 2013 Author Report Posted May 20, 2013 Hi, tried all the steps but no dice! I'm going to try again tomorrow- do you suggest going 20-30 dollars on the bids you previously listed? will that help?Don't know if this helps, but my wife now feels actually better to get rid of MTE and replace with Empire State BuildingThanks,- Doug
thereuare Posted May 21, 2013 Report Posted May 21, 2013 Would MTE no longer be acceptable, as why not ADD ESB to the mix while also still including MTE, rather than replacing MTE?If MTE is still acceptable i would only go up another $5 to $220 since HOTWIRE has a 4* hotel in the MTE zone for $221/nite with:Pet Friendly Fitness Restaurant Business Hi-Speed Internet Travel Accessible Room Accessible Bathroom Accessible Roll-in Shower ... best guess for this property would be the Doulbletree MetropolitanIf MTE is no longer acceptable you may want to consider HOTWIRE's 4* in the ESB zone for $233/nite with only a Pet Friendly amenity showing. This may be the Affinia Shelburne, but even if not, this property has a 90% recommendation from previous HOTWIRE guests and an impressive 4.5/5.0 TA rating, so there is the re-assurance of positive reviews.Let us know your thoughts and what you decide and how it goes OR how we can be of further help. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck!
