Morgolking Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 All,Need help making my first Priceline bid. Bidding on 3 rooms for a Manhattan hotel. I was planning on bidding for a 3 star or 3 1/2 star hotel but I read elsewhere that some 3 stars in NYC can be absolutely horrible. Will I be safe bidding 3 1/2 to 4 star, or should I even go as high as limiting myself to 4 star hotels?Need the three rooms to be in the same hotel somewhere in Manhattan. Preferably near Central Park or Korea town. Zones 2, 12, 16, 11, 10, 6, 3 look good to me.Our budget is $140-$180. If we HAVE to go higher it may be possible.Let me know what you think. Thank you.
AaronJB Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)Please list the names of the acceptable zones and we would be happy to offer suggestions on how to proceed - thanks.Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
Morgolking Posted May 16, 2013 Author Report Posted May 16, 2013 Thank you! In my original post I said these zones look ok: Zones 2, 12, 16, 11, 10, 6, 3Is that too many? If so, I'm open to suggestions as this is my first time to NYC.
thereuare Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Please list the names of the acceptable zones and we would be happy to offer suggestions on how to proceed - thanks. The zone numbers will change when PRICELINE adds, removes, or changes the name of a zone, so to avoid confusion (both now and especially in the future when others read this thread in the months/years to come) please post the zone names and we'll take it from there. Also, please read your messages and click each of these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links before replying. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... and your searches too! Thanks. Morgolking Posted May 16, 2013 Author Report Posted May 16, 2013 Thank you. I used the links above and will use them to make my purchase as well.Central Park South, Midtown East, Midtown West, Timse Square - Theatre District, Empire State Building Area, Chelsea Area all look good. Also are 3 1/2 stars in NYC safe or do we need to go for 4 stars? As I said, I was looking at possibly 3 stars or 3 1/2 stars, but I read another post that said I could end up with a hotel that is really sketchy.Thanks.
thereuare Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Also are 3 1/2 stars in NYC safe or do we need to go for 4 stars? As I said, I was looking at possibly 3 stars or 3 1/2 stars, but I read another post that said I could end up with a hotel that is really sketchy. Not sure if you're referring to safe and/or sketchy in terms of the actual hotel OR in terms of the neighborhood, so i'll answer both...In terms of safety, all of the neighborhoods you mentioned should be fine, imo, i wouldn't consider any of them to be unsafe (although as with any large city you should try to be aware of your surroundings)In terms of star rating there are some 'known' issues with some of the zones at 3.5* and under:CPS - has the Hudson Hotel which is well located but has notoriously small rooms (even by NYC standards)MTE - some of the hotels at less than 4* can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subwayHOTWIRE does have some options near your budget:4* MTE $177/nite (Dobuletree Metropolitan??)4* MSG-HK $190/nite (The New Yorker Hotel Ramada Plaza??)Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Morgolking Posted May 16, 2013 Author Report Posted May 16, 2013 I'd like to try and get cheaper on PRICELINE if possible.I'm having to add a day to my stay so the date is now 6/15-6/20.Thanks again!
thereuare Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 Please confirm:What star rating is it that you want to try for? All the previous zones above are still acceptable:Central Park SouthMidtown EastMidtown WestTimse Square - Theatre DistrictEmpire State Building AreaChelsea AreaWhat is your maximum bid at this time?Let us know all the above and we'll advise accordingly. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board. Morgolking Posted May 17, 2013 Author Report Posted May 17, 2013 4 Star and max bid at this time is $180. Ideally I'm hoping for somewhere around $150 but I know that would be a steal right now.

Morgolking Posted May 18, 2013 Author Report Posted May 18, 2013 I was unsuccessful going up through $180. Couple questions:1. During my next bidding attempt should I give up on going lower than $180 and start off where I left off, or restart with the original plan you posted?2. It's 24 hours that I to wait till I bid again, is it 24 hours since my first bid, last bid, or is a separate 24 clock kept for each particular search?3. I'm not familiar with hotwire, do I just search hotels and make a reservation or is there a bidding process there too?4. Last, I thought I could get a better deal for reserving three rooms, but is it actually more expensive to reserve multiple rooms? As always, thank you for the advice.
AaronJB Posted May 18, 2013 Report Posted May 18, 2013 There is no additional discount for multiple rooms, unfortunately. You can make a *particular* bid 24 hours after the last time that bid failed. Multiple rooms are not more expensive. At the moment - given the rates I'm seeing - I think a win is going to require moderately more than $180 ($195-215.) Whether or not rates will come down closer to your stay there is no way to know.HOTWIRE shows a series of listings with prices (zone, star rating, price and amenities.) There is no bidding.Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
Morgolking Posted May 18, 2013 Author Report Posted May 18, 2013 Yeah I went as high as $200 this morning and still wasn't successful. When I can rebid should I start where I left off or start lower? Also, if I go as high as $215 and fail would you recommend waiting a couple weeks? Please keep in mind my dates are not really flexible. Thanks!

Morgolking Posted May 20, 2013 Author Report Posted May 20, 2013 So far not having luck and I could'nt find the $221 PRICELINE EXPRESS deal -- maybe because I specified three rooms? Will keep trying.
AaronJB Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 Unfortunately, it only seems to appear when searching for one room. Are you seeing anything of interest when searching on HOTWIRE for these dates?Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
