Based upon current rates it may take a little more than $200 for a 4* hotel in one of these zones, but we can certainly try. However, to first clarify, you mention 'Soho' as being acceptable, but Soho is just one part of the larger Soho-Financial zone, i assume anywhere within the boundaries of this zone are acceptable?

Please confirm and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

If you are asking if FiDi is acceptable, I definitely think so, but I'd prefer to be staying a little higher uptown. I have some family coming in for graduation and some other cousins have already booked a hotel so I'd like to try to get one for my parents close to theirs if possible. They are at The Strand I think.

Thanks for your help. Do you have any suggested strategy for bidding?

Before suggesting a bidding strategy we first needed to confirm if we should include Soho-Downtown or not.

When bidding 4* in NYC you have TWO re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

So using the PRICELINE link, I went up to the 203 bid sequence and got rejected. You think it's a better idea to wait until there are a couple days before the trip to get a better deal or are prices usually even higher at that time?

Also, if I add FiDi, you think I'll be able to get a lower rate?

Thanks for your input.

The second half of May is traditionally a busy period. There's no way to know if rates will come down closer to your date/s, but I think waiting until the last moment during a period that's traditionally pretty busy/expensive is a risk - rate/s can certainly go up closer to the date/s as well. Rates are still on the high side downtown and I don't think - at least given the rate/s that I'm seeing - that a downtown 4* would be able to be had at a lower rate.

At current rates for a 4* hotel you're likely looking at ~$250 in midtown... $240 or less if including Downtown.

Your options come down to:

  • SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID (although at the moment this doesn't seem like ti would help too much)
  • raise your maximum bid
  • lower your star rating
  • consider adding other nearby zones

Along the lines of this last option, if you're willing to stay outside of the city and commute to Manhattan, you can get a nice 4* hotel in the Jersey City/Hoboken zone for ~$150/nite. You do lose a lot of the 'vibe' of staying directly in Manhattan, but it is an option if you're not flexible in your budget (or perhaps combine this option with SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID, staying 2 nites outside the city and 2 nites in the city)

Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board.
