hna Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 Hi.I am newbie to hotel bidding, and am going to stay in NYC on 5/2 - 5/3.I have seen some of my friends getting 4+ star hotel room in major US cities for $50~$100.When I looked up on hotels.com, some 2+ star hotel room in Queens was around $120, and I hope I could get better deal...I want to have a memorable night with my friend, but we are both students and we cannot spend too much for the hotel..I tried bidding $130~$150 on areas in Manhattan, but it failed every time.I am willing to pay $120~160 for a 3~4 star hotel room in Manhattan, and $60~130 for 3~4 star in Queens(near flushing), or Brooklyn(one in safe and nice area in Brooklyn). Is it too low? Or should I have bidden 1~2 months earlier?Or was there anything wrong in my 'strategy'?If I am too late, or if what I want is not feasible, what is your suggestion?Thank you for helping!
thereuare Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 Welcome to BetterBidding! This is an expensive time of year in NYC and based upon current prices your budget is not enough at the moment for Manhattan. From where are you coming to the city from and how will you arrive? The best bang for your buck at the moment may be in Hoboken-Jersey City where what appears to be the W Hoboken is offered on HOTWIRE for $150/nite. This is a fairly new hotel and all rooms have great views of the Manhattan Skyline... access to Manhattan would be via PATH train which is a about a 5 minute walk away. You could also try bidding on PRICELINE for the equivalent zone but you could also land a different 4* hotel in the zone (all known 4* hotels have good PATH train access, even if in Jersey City).Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. If still looking at Queens and/or Brooklyn, let us know which zones, by PRICELINE name, you're willing to accept and we'll advise accordingly. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. hna Posted April 27, 2013 Author Report Posted April 27, 2013 Thank you very much for your answer.I and my friend are getting there by bus, from Buffalo and Boston, respectively. We are arriving in the morning on 5/2 and leaving at late night on 5/3. I thought it's the cheap season of the year in NYC.I hardly considered Hoboken as an option but it sounds nice considering the price. The only concern was that it is not linked to Manhattan by NYC subway(this is why I was considering Queens(+safety +Chinese foods)) and I don't know how PATH is and how long it would take. However, it seems like PATH runs 24 hours, takes only 10 minutes to get to NYC, and not expensive, and I got interested in bidding for 4 star hotel in Hoboken with priceline. How may I do that?
hna Posted April 27, 2013 Author Report Posted April 27, 2013 Oh, I realized the HOTWIRE listed hotels were also 4 stars. If I book by HOTWIRE, will it book the W hotel? or some other?
thereuare Posted April 28, 2013 Report Posted April 28, 2013 This is Spring which is high season for NYC.. the weather gets nice and the rates go up.The PATH runs 24/7 and is about 15 minutes to midtown... fare is $2 each way and this is not part of the NYC subway system so it's a separate fare.Currently the 4* on HOTWIRE is priced at $156/nite and has these amenities:Pet Friendly Fitness Restaurant Business Hi-Speed Internet Tennis Room Accessible Handicapped Parking ... my best guess for this one would be the W Hoboken (i could be wrong and it could be some other property, but i believe the W is the most likely for this one).If you want to try bidding for a 4* hotel in this zone you have to be willing to accept any 4* hotel in the zone, as there is no way to target, or avoid, a particular property wen bidding on PRICELINE or HOTWIRE.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. hna Posted April 30, 2013 Author Report Posted April 30, 2013 Thank you.I got a room at Hyatt Regency in Jersey City for $110 + 20 tax using the HOTWIRE link you provided. The price dropped on Monday(I guess this is why it's not W Hoboken?), and it has gotten much cheaper.Thank you!(Are pools free?)
thereuare Posted April 30, 2013 Report Posted April 30, 2013 Congratulations on your success! An excellent deal for this property during this time of year. The PATH train is literally at the door of this hotel and it will be a quick ride (less than 8 minutes) to Downtown Manhattan... from there you can catch the subway uptown if that is where you're heading.Unless things have changed, the pool at this property is indeed free. Can you please add a reply to this thread with the amenities shown before your purchase... you can still view this information by going to HOTWIRE and clicking the MY ACCOUNT link near the top right of their home page.Thank you for sharing your results and using the HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your purchase. hna Posted May 9, 2013 Author Report Posted May 9, 2013 Really enjoyed the trip.Manhattan was only seen at the corner of the window, but the view was not bad.The amenities:Indoor pool(s) Fitness Center Pool(s) Restaurant(s) Business Center High-Speed Internet Access Accessible for the blind Accessible for the deaf Accessible path of travel In-room accessibility Accessible bathroom Handicapped parking Roll-in shower We had beer at the bar at the lounge. The lounge was wonderful, but the beer was very dissatisfying. The price was cheap though. ($5~8 a bottle)
