What are these tax recovery charges and fees they all seem to want ?

In addition to the room rate per nite there are taxes/fees... hotels usually have local taxes and often an occupancy tax (a 'lodging tax') that is collected on any hotel room rental... there is also a booking fee included in the taxes/fees number which goes to the agency you're using to book thru (PRICELINE, HOTWIRE, Expedia, Travelocity, etc) for handling the transaction.
