Hotwire Hotel: How far out should I book?

I only used HOTWIRE one on a trip to San Antonio this winter, but it turned out great. I watched for a while since I wasn't sure of the dates. It seemed like there were good offers about 8wks out, then everything disappeared for a while, and then about 2wks before the action went back up. Is it the same for all cities? I may not be able to book until the beginning of June for a trip at the end of June but I'm worried I'll miss out on the best bargains. Advice?

Rates, and their fluctuations, are date specific and based upon how expected supply/demand (new reservations and cancellations) come in relative to actual supply/demand. Sometimes rates are best well in advance of your stay... other times they are best just a week or two before. However, it's a moot point since if your plans are not firm you can't/shouldn't do anything until you're able to commit to a non-refundable purchase.
