MelTnNc Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 Hi!I checked my messages and clicked the Hotwire and PRICELINE links from there :).We are planning a trip to Chicago for our family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children ages 6 and 4. I'm looking for some guidance on where to book and have a lot of random details to provide:We are likely to stay in the city 5/14-16 and then with family in Des Plaines the 16-18. She has offered to let us stay with her the 14-16, but we don't want to outstay our welcome, so if we can find a good value, would like to stay out of her hair as long as possible. So, all that to say, we'd happily stay in the city our entire trip if the price was right, so 5/14-5/18 or any combo of those dates. We are flying in to Midway, so no need for parking. We have another family member in college at DePaul and lives in that neighborhood. So with her sister in Des Plaines, somewhere north is convenient for everyone, but we aren't insistent on staying in that area if further south was a better deal.We are completely comfortable using public transportation and walking, so really do not mind any location. Our 6 year old is particularly interested in the science and industry museum, but husband enjoys shopping (lucky me, huh :)?), so we will at least window shop Michigan Ave. as a family, we love parks, figure to do the zoo. We have done the history museum (with Sue the Trex) so won't do that this time.I don't know if we are super concerned with night life, but will want to have dinner out probably every night.Free breakfast would be great, but being close to a grocery where we could pick up breakfast and snack foods would be just as valuable to us.3 years ago we snagged the embassy suites downtown on Hotwire this same week for $90 ish a night so we are having a hard time managing our expectations ;).Would love to go no higher than $120/ night, in my perfect world, closer to $100 would be awesome (I know, I know). We have no preference on star rating. Absolutely willing to try Priceline as well. I know we are dealing with a large conference going on that week that is causing prices to be higher..Oh, and if we end up being in the city for only two nights, then 2 nights in Des Plaines, best direct route from Des Plaines to downtown would be great to know. I know my cousin will have guidance, but I'm trying not to bug her too much right now with questions :).Thanks!
AaronJB Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 Welcome to Betterbidding.Random details are always greatly appreciated - anything you can tell us about what you are looking for is helpful in terms of researching and suggesting options."3 years ago we snagged the embassy suites downtown on Hotwire this same week for $90 ish a night so we are having a hard time managing our expectations "Unfortunately, rates have gone up in the past few years fairly noticeably from the lows of 2008/2009."Our 6 year old is particularly interested in the science and industry museum, but husband enjoys shopping (lucky me, huh ?), so we will at least window shop Michigan Ave. as a family, we love parks, figure to do the zoo. We have done the history museum (with Sue the Trex) so won't do that this time."The Zoo is awesome and free, and a minor suggestion nearby would be the Peggy Notabert Nature Museum, which does have a live butterfly exhibit and does charge admission - it's a very nice, smaller museum. You know, I actually think you're in luck, and given how much May is (and that the largest convention of the year starts shortly after):When searching for 5/14-16 (2a/2c), I see a 3* in the Loop w/:Free Breakfast Free Internet Pet friendly Indoor pool(s) Fitness Center Pool(s) Business Center Laundry Facilities (self-service) High-Speed Internet Access Accessible bathroom Handicapped parking For $118. My guess is that this is a new amenity set for the La Quinta Loop, which is a newer property. It's not the Embassy Suites unfortunately (as the two ES properties downtown are nice), but free breakfast is a bonus and the property gets excellent reviews. It's also a couple of blocks from an Orange Line station (which is the line that runs from Midway.)The other option that I see is a potential match for the Hotel Indigo for $116 - no breakfast, but a nice location in the Gold Coast. Let us know if this is of interest. The Loop is fine during the day - during the night it's okay, but just be aware that if you do stay out later in the evening, it may be quiet around as the area where the LQ is is primarily a business district. There will be more going on (restaurants, etc) around the Gold Coast. In terms of getting to Des Plaines, I'd take the Metra - the only issue becomes the Metra may not go right by where you need to be (this is the Des Plaines Metra station details: http://metrarail.com/metra/en/home/maps_schedules/metra_system_map/up-nw/station.DESPLAINES.html)The Metra trains are very nice - certainly an enjoyable ride out to (or from) the burbs.Additionally, with HOTWIRE, you can guarantee two beds - with PRICELINE, it only guarantees 1 bed/double occupancy.Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Will update and ask more questions!
AaronJB Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 Please let us know if you have additional city questions - once you get a hotel locked in, I'd be happy to offer directions and other recommendations (I like offering recommendations once a hotel is locked in - that way I can offer more detailed directions from the hotel.)If the condo is Des Plaines is right by the Metra train station, that would be hugely convenient. The Metra trains are more expensive than the CTA trains, but they are two levels (like Amtrak) and offer bathrooms and conductors - and are far more comfortable than the CTA trains. The Des Plaines Metra train goes from Ogilvie Transit Center, which is in the West Loop - not far at all from the La Quinta. There is actually a really nice French Market under the train area in Ogilvie, if you want to take some neat items to snack on on the train or out to Des Plaines. You can read more about that here: http://www.frenchmarketchicago.com/hours/Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
MelTnNc Posted April 9, 2013 Author Report Posted April 9, 2013 Ok, I'm ready to book our room. The LaQuinta Property is most appealing to us bc of the breakfast and preferring the location just a tiny bit more than the gold coast hotel. But I wanted to ask if you had any thoughts on what this might be--I clicked on the HOTWIRE link and wen searching from 2a/2c for 5/14-16, I came across this:3* for $119MMA/RNAFitness CenterBusiness centerHigh Speed Internetin room accessibilityroll in showerrecommended by 75% of hotwire customers and 3.5 out of 5 tripadvisor rating.

I'm pretty sure during these two days in the city, are plans are for shopping on Michigan Ave and the Children's Museum/Navy Pier and probably the Lincoln Park Zoo.
AaronJB Posted April 9, 2013 Report Posted April 9, 2013 My guess for the Mag Mile-RN hotel would be the Inn of Chicago. I'm also seeing what appears to be the Indigo for $116.The Inn of Chicago isn't a great property (it was previously an older Best Western), but it is in a great location right off Michigan Ave.The Indigo is a nice property but at the very top end of the NMA area. The La Quinta gets great reviews and offers breakfast, but is a bit out of the way in the West Part of the Loop. The potential Indigo: Gold Coast 3.5* for $116 (you may see a slightly different price):Pet friendly Boutique Hotel Smoke Free Rooms Fitness Center Restaurant(s) Business Center High-Speed Internet Access Golf Nearby Tennis Nearby Spa Services Accessible for the blind Accessible for the deaf Accessible path of travel In-room accessibility Accessible bathroom Handicapped parking Roll-in shower Additionally, given that the rates for these three listings are notably less than the majority of what else is available, and this is a busy period, I think there is at least moderate risk for one or more of these to potentially go.Pros/cons:potential Inn of Chicago:Pros: Great location right off Michigan Ave.Cons: Older property, mixed reviews.potential La Quinta:Pros: Not far from "L" and Metra station for Des Plaines. Breakfast. Great reviews.Cons: The West Loop is business-heavy and may be on the quiet side at night. If you are out later though, you could take a cab.potential Indigo:Pros: Nice property (I've stayed there). The Gold Coast neighborhood is very nice and not a far walk from the top end of Michigan Ave (a few minutes walk.) It's a moderate walk, but it's a straightforward walk North to Lincoln Park and the Zoo - and that is quite a beautiful walk, too, through a lovely residential area. Subway station and two large grocery stores right nearby. The Red Line subway to the Loop is quick.Cons: A few minutes walk North of the NMA area, it's not centrally located. A couple of other thoughts:1. The Children's Museum at Navy Pier is nice, but Navy Pier is really - in my opinion - otherwise kind of an overpriced tourist trap. The LP Zoo is really nice, and free. The Notabert Nature Center just North of the Zoo is also recommended (although that does have an admission cost.)2. If you go to the Zoo, the Old Town neighborhood is not far away at all, and the famed Second City theater is there, as well as one of my favorite stores in the city, The Spice House (http://www.thespicehouse.com/info/chicago-spice-store.html), which is a husband/wife herb/spice store that is really a feast for the senses, and frequented by many of Chicago's top chefs. They also have blends based on Chicago neighborhoods, which are kind of fun.Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
MelTnNc Posted April 12, 2013 Author Report Posted April 12, 2013 We certainly prefer the location of the gold coast property, my husband can't see past the $2 more for the laquinta property that would include breakfast ;). Hmmmm...whattodo whattodo. And thank you for the heads up about Navy Pier. When I search for a single night, so check in on 5/14-5/15 and again 5/15-5/16, the 3 star MMN/WTFree Internet Indoor pool(s) Smoke Free Rooms Fitness Center Pool(s) Restaurant(s) Business Center Laundry Facilities (self-service) High-Speed Internet Access seems to be a match for the Four Points. Do you agree? If I book this today, Hotwire has a $20 coupon i received in my email. So if I booked each night seperatly, I could save $40 off my stay. I realize this is working the system a bit, is this frowned upon? I'd like to keep our same room, do you think that is likely? And if I can't, would the hotel keep our luggage for the 4 or 5 hours between check out and check in? When I search for those dates back to back (so 5/14-5/16), a different 3 star pops up, most likely the Inn of Chicago, and I'd prefer the Four Points. Am I being ridiculous going about it this way, haha?
MelTnNc Posted April 12, 2013 Author Report Posted April 12, 2013 potential La Quinta:Pros: Not far from "L" and Metra station for Des Plaines. Breakfast. I think the only thing holding me back from the laquinta property is that I'd rather not stay where we would potentially need to take a cab to get to/from dinner bc its so quiet at night. We'd likely eat further north. Certainly not a big deal to take a cab, just what i'd prefer. I like the Indigo location and don't mind the walk since its a bit more north.
AaronJB Posted April 12, 2013 Report Posted April 12, 2013 I am seeing the potential Four Points when looking up the nights separately (the NMA-WT listing you mention right above.)If you do book both on their own, you will not likely have to move rooms - you would notify the front desk upon arrival and hopefully they will be able to work out something at that point (you may have to call down the next morning.)If the HOTWIRE coupon is not "one-use", then there should not be an issue with using it multiple times. Please use the site's HOTWIRE link to start your purchases and searches. You are definitely not being ridiculous about going about the booking this way; the way things are, it's not unusual to see differing (and sometimes preferable) inventory when searching for two parts of a stay separately, as inventory can really vary in a major city from day-to-day. If you were able to get the Four Points, that's a great location. One note if you do go with the Four Points, there's a Trader Joe's literally around the corner - a great option for cheaper snacks/etc to take back to the hotel or carry throughout the day. There's also a Whole Foods nearby. The Indigo is by a Jewel Grocery and Treasure Island (a local grocery.)Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Thank you for your help! Will come back to this to ask for more kid friendly recommendations as well as a dinner rec for a date night without the kiddos. Husband loves good craft beer, local if possible, and we will do pizza with family, so probably not looking for pizza for that particular meal :). Trader Joes is near by, correct? Would love breakfast/brunch recommendations. We aren't picky, love eating local.
AaronJB Posted April 12, 2013 Report Posted April 12, 2013 Congrats on your success. :)This is a really, really nice win for busy date/s and this property is in a superb location. Given the (slightly) different price, it would be greatly appreciated if you could post the additional night as a separate thread.I'd be happy to offer a bunch of recommendations shortly, and will post them in this thread. You're quite close to a LOT of restaurant options in River North.Thank you for sharing your win and using the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
AaronJB Posted April 13, 2013 Report Posted April 13, 2013 An assortment of thoughts:1. Children's Museum at Navy Pier is nice, but Navy Pier is really overpriced - the rides, the food, everything. The views are nice, but that's about it. Personally, I think the Zoo/Peggy Notabert Nature Center would be a better option, or - given that it is a trek to get there - the Museum of Science and Industry. For the latter, you have to take the Metra Electric to the 55th/56th/57th st Station (one station despite the name) and walk a couple blocks East. You get the train at the Millennium Park station - http://metrarail.com/metra/en/home/maps_schedules/metra_system_map/me/station.RANDOLPH.html2. There's a smaller Trader Joe's around the corner, but there are plenty of restaurant options nearby.- Chef Rick Bayless (Frontera Grill) has casual restaurant Xoco not far away, which offers a great deal of tasty and enjoyable fare (breakfast/lunch/dinner).Photos: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/xoco-chicago?select=t2qWpckKA4Bnt6JfcmngaA#t2qWpckKA4Bnt6JfcmngaA- Wildberry is just South of the river (primarily breakfast):http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wildberry-cafe-chicago?select=6wi-YOt19_AeUbkgKaEa9g#6wi-YOt19_AeUbkgKaEa9g- Ed Debevic's is something I'll throw out there, but I'll note that it was fun when I was a kid, but about 25-30 years later as an adult my view on it is "no, just no." It's one of those things that people are understandably either going to love or hate. It's a 50's diner where the wait staff have (on purpose, it's supposed to be funny) attitude and occasionally break out into song/dance numbers. Frommers puts it well: "One of the city's first "theme" restaurants, Ed Debevic's, 640 N. Wells St., at Ontario Street (tel. 312/664-1707), is a temple to America's hometown lunch-counter culture. The burgers-and-milkshakes menu is kid-friendly, but it's the staff shtick that makes this place memorable. The waitresses play the parts of gum-chewing toughies who make wisecracks, toss out good-natured insults, and even sit right down at your table."http://www.frommers.com/destinations/chicago/0006026798.html#ixzz2QLU6YkyQhttp://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g35805-d427762-Reviews-Ed_Debevic_s-Chicago_Illinois.html- The Foodlife Food Court at the Water Tower mall is family friendly and unique in that it's a lot of different stations (14 different kitchens) but one check-out, so it's a food court where you can combine things. Because this is owned by boutique restaurant owner Lettuce Entertain You (whose Wildfire downtown I do like), the food is higher-end than most mall food courts.http://www.foodlifechicago.com/how-it-worksPhotos: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/foodlife-chicago?selected=0APfCOP2j5DH4lWt3OL-aQ#0APfCOP2j5DH4lWt3OL-aQ- Flat Top Grill is not the best around, but it's good and a good value - it's an "all you can eat" Stir Fry place where you can try all different combinations (if you choose you can keep going back and trying new things). There is a location in the Loop and one near Old Town.http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/flat-top-stir-fry-grill-chicago-4?select=Nmc0pP1ENFTNNiWr7lUZAQ#cGQdBa_cr3KbLJ_yFjzKmQ- People go with Uno's/Due's for pizza, but I just have never been that big of a fan or of the dining experience (long waits, Uno's is tiny and cramped). If you want Chicago Pizza, I'd recommend Lou Malnati's, but if you want more unique, somewhat higher-end pizza, I really like Italian place La Madia.La Madia pics: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/la-madia-chicago?select=CXIhfvAAX4VtaCZbidJPHQ#zqceZRRtEULmNuAuHkr7fQ- Yelp pics of The Spice House (mentioned earlier in the thread), which gets a 5/5 from over 250 reviews:http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/the-spice-house-chicago?select=y8m1WZFOmZ1EcdSw2afatQ#y8m1WZFOmZ1EcdSw2afatQHigher-end, I've heard very good things about Sable, which is the restaurant in the new Palomar hotel, which is an easy walk from your hotel - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g35805-d1765571-Reviews-Sable_Kitchen_Bar-Chicago_Illinois.htmlLet me know a little more about what you're looking for in terms of the date night restaurant (particular likes/dislikes?) and I'd be happy to offer further suggestions - your hotel is near tons of varied restaurant options.Another option that may be popular for all ages is the Doughnut Vault: http://thedoughnutvault.tumblr.com/ (although I believe it's cash only - and while they open at particular times, they only remain open until they run out.)To get to the LP Zoo, you can take the Red Line subway from the Grand station nearby (http://www.chicago-l.org/stations/grand-state.html) up to the Fullerton station and then it's a moderate walk East and you'll pass the North end of the Zoo and the Peggy Notabert. One fun moment for kids is that during this particular trip at one point the subway goes above ground to the "L" tracks. The Green City Organic Farmers Market is in Lincoln Park near the South end of the Zoo (even if you don't get anything, fun to browse through after the zoo.)http://www.yelp.com/biz/green-city-market-chicago-2It is a rather long (but very straightforward and pretty) walk up to the Zoo (or back from the Zoo if you want to train up and then walk back) if it's a nice day outside. Let me know if you think this may be of interest and I'd be happy to offer suggestions on route.I'll add more to this later, but I'll start with the above recommendations - let me know if you have any questions and more about what you are looking for for the date night restaurant and I'd be happy to offer further recommendations.
MelTnNc Posted April 14, 2013 Author Report Posted April 14, 2013 Ok, really like the suggestions so far. We are for sure going to do the zoo/nature center combo you mentioned and we knew we wanted to do the science and industry museum for DS who is almost 6. We might just walk through Navy Pier but will be sure to plan on not eating there :).Thank you for the breakfast recs and lunch ones too. Anything to be sure to hit for lunch close to the zoo? My Chicago family prefer Lou Malnatis, so we will try that with them since we've only ever had giordanos. As for other dinner recs, we like good craft beer, DH fancys himself a beer snob, so maybe a nice dinner out and then maybe someplace else for drinks? We always prefer something local when eating out while traveling. Oh and let me know if you think of any dessert/bakery type shops you might recommend.
AaronJB Posted April 16, 2013 Report Posted April 16, 2013 Nookies would be a local option nearby the Zoo in the Old Town area.Yelp - http://www.yelp.com/biz/nookies-chicagoJust a bit West of the Old Town area is another Flat Top Grill location (as mentioned above, all you can eat Stir Fry, you can go back again and again if you choose.)Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder is also not far:http://www.yelp.com/biz/chicago-pizza-and-oven-grinder-co-chicagoAnother recommendation would be Edzo's Burger Shop:http://www.yelp.com/biz/edzos-burger-shop-chicago-3In terms of sweets, there's always Vosages on Michigan Ave, Bittersweet Bakery (http://www.yelp.com/biz/bittersweet-pastry-shop-and-cafe-chicago) and Hendrickx Belgian Bread Crafter (on Walton - not that far North of your hotel.)In terms of an "unusual" option, there's the Dining Room at Kendall College, which is a "training ground" restaurant at Kendall, which is one of the more highly regarded culinary colleges in the US - it's higher/high end dining for more reasonable prices than you find elsewhere due to the situation.http://www.yelp.com/biz/kendall-college-the-dining-room-chicagoI'd call ahead for the Kendall dining room.Goose Island Brewery is only a few minutes away, and I'd also suggest the very historic Green Door Tavern in River North.http://www.yelp.com/biz/green-door-tavern-chicago
MelTnNc Posted May 19, 2013 Author Report Posted May 19, 2013 Just wanted to pop back in and give a review. We had a wonderful stay at the Four Points by Sheraton Chicago Downtown Mag Mile. The room was very clean, the hotel staff very very friendly and helpful. The linens were fresh, the location was wonderful, everything was very nice. We were able to check in around noon, and on check out they held our bags as we didn't need to head to the suburbs til 3pm. We grabbed the 3day CTA pass on groupon for $8 and put it to good use. Had pizza at Lou Milnatis, our now favorite deep dish chicago pizza place, gigantic doughnuts at the doughnut vault. The weather was perfect, kiddos got to spend quite a bit of fun in the fountains with the faces in Millennium Park, just a really really wonderful trip. Also, saw The Book of Mormon at the Bank of America Theatre and it was really wonderful too.
AaronJB Posted May 19, 2013 Report Posted May 19, 2013 Thank you for the follow-up review - glad to hear that you had a great stay in Chicago (and lucky to get tickets to Book of Mormon.) The weather thankfully has been nice in Chicago this Spring.
