Hi

Just wondering if you can give me some tips for bidding on a hotel in New York via Priceline. I'm looking for a hotel near Times Square or midtown east. Should I start bidding now or just wait until April? I saw that one person got the Alex cross hotel for $110/night. Any thoughts?

Typically this is an expensive time of year in NYC... i'm assuming that win for the Alex was not for the same dates as your own? (and more likely in the winter months?)

What is your desired star rating and maximum budget for this trip?

We can certainly suggest a strategy for you to follow, but $120 is not realistic for a 4* hotel in midtown for these dates... i'd highly recommend start to think about what you want to do if $120 is rejected:

-raise your budget

-include other zones

-lower your star rating

-stay outside of the city and commute in

-SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID

If $120 is your absolute maximum limit, let us know which zones (by PRICELINE name) you're willing to accept (you mention near TS and MTE but i don't know if that means TS and MTE only or if other neighboring/nearby zones such as MTW, CPS, MSG, Chelsea, ESB are also acceptable) and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow, but i'd suggest you consider raising your budget and/or lowering your star rating and/or including as many zones as possible that are acceptable. Based upon current prices, for a 4* hotel in midtown i think you're likely looking at the $180-$200 area.

You can see the Priceline Hotel List to see examples of 3.5* hotels in each of these zones. One issue with 3.5* and below in MTE is that some of the hotels can get a bit far east and it can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway... would this be acceptable?

Let us know which star level you'd like to try for first and how high you're willing to bid at that rating and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

Rates vary significantly from day-to-day and seasonally. $100 for a 4* is more likely from January-to-March; once you start getting into late March and into early Spring (April/May) rates start ramping up considerably. I don't think you'll need to go to $200 (HOTWIRE has a 4* in MTE for $201), but I'd guess $170-190 +/- is probably the range that you'll need to be in. You have time - I'd start at $135 and work higher by $5's using re-bidding.

Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Is you goal still for a 4* hotel in the MTE or TS zones up to $200/nite, for 4/27-4/30?

Please confirm, and click each of these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links, then reply to this thread and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

Also, just realised that someone posted on the board that they have the Roosevelt mte for $120 in may. I would be very happy with that.

Again, rates are date specific and the rates you keep mentioning are for dates/times of year that are much slower then your dates. Here is an extreme example that will hopefully make it clearer:

Imagine a win for Indianapolis posted by a user at $80/nite... if you're going to Indinapolis during the SuperBowl would you expect to win a hotel that the same $80/nite? Obviously the 'regular' rate of $80 is not going to be available during a very busy time like SuperBowl weekend when most hotels are likely able sell out on their own and don't need to discount at all. While this is an extreme example, it's the same premise, you're coming to NYC during high season so you can't expect to win at the same prices as somebody who has come during low season.

With the above noted we always start on the lower side so that if something less is avaialble (maybe you get lucky) then you have a chance at the lower price, but based upon current rates $120 is very likely not realistic for these dates.

When bidding 4* in NYC you have FOUR re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.
