Geoff-O Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 Hey everyone,We have already booked tickets to go to New York from May 15th to May 20th of this year. We are not picky when it comes to an area, as long as it is central. For the priceline bid I have included quite some areas:- Central Park South- Chelsea Area- Empire State Building Area- Hell's Kitchen- Madison Square Garden- Midtown East- Midtown West- Queensborough Bridge- Times Square- Upper WestsideFor a 3,5+ star hotel I have placed a bid of $140 per night. Unfortunately, Priceline was still not able to offer me a hotel for that price. Should I wait, change my search criteria or increase the price slightly? Any suggestions of what I should do are welcome. If anyone thinks that one of the areas is not suitable for a first-time visit to New York I would also like to hear about that. Thanks in advance!
AaronJB Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)Unfortunately, this is square in the middle of the busier portion of the Spring travel season (and there may be a graduation or two during this time), so rates are going to be higher. If you want to stay someplace central, I'd focus on:- Central Park South- Chelsea Area- Empire State Building Area- Madison Square Garden- Midtown East- Midtown West- Times SquareHell's Kitchen is not a bad location, but there's only a couple of hotels in this zone and as such, it's not really recommended. Additionally, there are a couple of hotels at the 3.5* level in Midtown East that are somewhat out of the way (they are rather far E in MTE) and Central Park South includes the Hudson at the 3.5* level, which has seriously small rooms (although NYC rooms in general are small, the Hudson's are about 120-140 sq ft.)Are you familiar with re-bidding? What would be your desired max bid per night for this stay?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
Geoff-O Posted March 3, 2013 Author Report Posted March 3, 2013 Dear Aaron,Thank you for this information, it is very helpful. I am familiar with rebidding, as I have gone up to $140 dollars. However, I do not have any idea of what would be a reasonable price for that specific period, which is why I stopped at 140. So I do not really have a max of what I want to spend, I just want a good deal :) And with regards to size, we do not really mind small rooms as we will be only using it for sleeping.

thereuare Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 At current rates you're likely looking at about $200-$220 for a 3.5*/4* hotel in a central area.Downtown is not as centrally located but do-able for the right price, and will likely cost you in the $175 area at the moment. While these rates may be more than you were originally thinking, if you search our sister site MAPS and HOTELS.com for '1 mile from Times Square New York City' you can then filter to just the 3.5* and higher hotels and you'll see just how expensive rates for these dates are. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Geoff-O Posted March 4, 2013 Author Report Posted March 4, 2013 Dear all,Thanks for the help. Eventually we got a room after some searching and looking on this forum:- Days Hotel BroadwayThis is a lot less stars than I was initially looking for, but the two-star hotels that were listed in the areas on Priceline looked quite OK. The bid was accepted at $150. Thanks for the assistance during the process!
thereuare Posted March 4, 2013 Report Posted March 4, 2013 Congratulations on your success! Sorry to hear this was a lower star rating then you thought you would get for your $150 budget, but unfortunately this is an expensive time of year in an expensive cityThank you for sharing your win with the board.
