This is our first time visiting Chicago. We're going for a short weekend 3/15 - 3/18 Looking for a hotel that is close to all the normal tourist stuff (navy Pier, St patty's day parade, Cloud gate etc.) Any suggestions on areas to bid on? A friend suggested the area where Hotel Felix is located. Any other suggestions?

Trying to stay under $150 if possible. All of the rates seem to be higher during that time.

Thanks!

Rates are a bit higher than the norm for the first two nights because of St Patrick's Day and I believe there may be a convention during this time period. However, prices for the last night when viewed separately are vastly cheaper - would you have any interest in possibly splitting your stay if it offered some savings on the overall total? I think you could likely win a 4* in the River North-NMA area on PRICELINE for around $120-135 +/- for all three nights together, but prices for the last night are quite a bit cheaper - I'm seeing what appears to be the Sax or Felix for $88 on HOTWIRE for the last night only.

If you have not yet been to Chicago, I'd highly suggest skipping Navy Pier, which is honestly a tourist trap with some nice views and is expensive (especially for what it offers.) Additionally, while Chicago weather hasn't been nearly as bad in the Winter as it used to be 15-20 years ago, Navy Pier in March is still not something I'd recommend - if the weather is brisk, the wind coming off the lake is no fun. I'd much rather recommend Lincoln Park Zoo, or spending the time at the Art Institute, or heading to the restaurants in River North or exploring the Lincoln Park neighborhood, among other activities. As for Cloud Gate (aka "The Bean"), personally I think that's something that really requires a couple of minutes to see and given the fact that it's next to the Art Institute, if you were planning on heading there you can tie the two stops together.

In terms of bidding, I'd recommend staying North of the River (The River North-NMA zone on PRICELINE), but in terms of bidding, the River North-NMA area is a large area and you have to be willing to stay anywhere within it. Hotels within the zone are all pretty much close or in areas with shopping and/or restaurants and nightlife, but if you wanted to be in a specific part of the zone, there's no way to pinpoint it. HOTWIRE breaks the River North-NMA zone on PRICELINE into three parts: Mag Mile-River North (the bottom third of the area, including the River North restaurant area), the Mag Mile North-Water Tower area (middle, and the core of the NMA shopping area) and the Gold Coast-Lake Shore Drive area (the top of the area and the nearby Gold Coast neighborhood.)

There is absolutely and entirely no need to rent a car in Chicago. Public transit around downtown is just fine, and downtown is actually very, very walkable. Renting a car in Chicago is only added hassle and a lot of added cost (parking of at least $20-25 per day in lots or $45-65 per night at hotels.)
