STL Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 I am looking for a NYC hotel 10/6-10/9. Best deal on a Hotwire for a 4* is $272 in Midtown East (could be Millennium U.N. Plaza Hotel). That price is above what IDEALLY I would like to pay for this weekend, understanding that this weekend isn't going to be cheap. I would like ensure I get a 4* and am willling to pay a little more for that. However, I was hoping to get this done for $210. Is this realistic? If I follow the strategy for the above poster, do you have any input on what bidding I should start with given that I am shooting for <$210? Also, we are attending a wedding that weekend in NJ, does anyone foresee a problem taking the train back to Manhattan Saturday night around 11 pm or midnight?
thereuare Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 Welcome to BetterBidding!I have separated your post into its own thread as your dates are different than the thread you had replied to. Likewise, it's not a good idea to follow strategies in threads for dates other than your own... rates (and bidding strategies) are date/rate specific and therefore following another's strategy can easily lead to a wasted bidding opportunity, or worse, an overbid. At the 4* level you have two re-bid zones, if you're not familiar with re-bidding please read PRICELINE RE-BIDDING EXPLAINED and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board. This is how i would begin, since you have time on your side:Select 4* MTE...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and MTW...Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $175, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and UM/CPS...Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $175, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTE and UM/CPS...Bid $185, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $190, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $195.The above may prove to be too low, but with some time on your hands, i would try the above first and then we can update accordingly.Good Luck with the above and let us know if you have any questions. STL Posted August 23, 2005 Author Report Posted August 23, 2005 Alright, 18 bids and an hour later, no luck. I executed the strategy exactly as instructed using free re-bids in UPW and UPE. As I learn that I am going to be paying more than I thought for the hotel on this trip, it is good to know I couldn't have gotten a hotel for any cheaper because I tried. What do you suggest next? I would guess based on this not working I would have to adjust my max upward. Since hotels are so expensive this weekend and the most likely Hotwire alternative is still $272, I am game so long as I save something, at this point (even if the savings only amount to an Essa bagel!!)...
thereuare Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 I would book the Millenium UN thru this link as a back-up. The price is $287/nite (no booking fee so about $10 more than thru Hotiwre) but is fully cancellable up until 3 days before check-in date... this way you at least protect yourself if the Hotwire offer disappears. Is SPLITTING YOUR BID an option? (if so, how much would you have to save to make it worthwhile)Bump this thread in a few days when you're eligible to re-bid and we'll take another look at the most up to date rates (unless splitting is an option at which point i'll gave some other ideas). STL Posted August 26, 2005 Author Report Posted August 26, 2005 Thanks for Millenium options. I have scrambled to find several options that are able to be reserved with no commitment ranging from the Kimberly for $269, to the Park South for $239, to the Chandler for $194. I am thinking after looking at the list of P/L hotels I would prefer most of the 4* in MTW, MTE and CPS for up to $230? Does that make sense? My thinking is those 4* will be a little more consistent and are in a preferable location. Do aynone disagree with that sentiment? What bidding strategy would optimize this approach?
thereuare Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 Select 4* MTE...Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $200, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW...Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $200, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS...Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $200, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and MTW...Bid $205, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $210, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $215, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and UM/CPS...Bid $205, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $210, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $215, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTE and UM/CPS...Bid $220, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $225, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $230. STL Posted August 27, 2005 Author Report Posted August 27, 2005 No dice. Thanks for the strategy. I may decide I would like to increase the upper limit to see if I could get one of the Priceline 4* hotels, but for now I will stand pat with the reservations I have. Thanks, again.
