sn0wie Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 I have been reading these forums for about a week and am a frequenter of many other travel forums; I am curious to try, however, and this has always fascinated me--I have <never> booked with PRICELINE or any other bidding website, but I think that this is the time. I was always afraid of a bad experience, but one has to try sometime, right?:DSo, I am going to NYC the 8th for a quick weekend (similar to another poster here) and would like to take the lady to a few exciting places (Natural History, Met, MoMa, Guggenheim..). I think this pegs me to stay somewhere in…Manhattan. We'll likely take a cab from JFK.. Not totally sure on the zone.I did find the 4-Star Doubletree in Midtown for $129 a night Queen Bed; do you think this would be ideal and dumb to pass up, or should I attempt to grab something on Priceline that might be nicer/cheaper? This looks pretty nice for $129..Location tips appreciated too—thank you guys! I am no longer familiar with the area.
thereuare Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Welcome to Betterbidding!I'm not sure which Doubletree property you're referring (the one in Chelsea on 29th St OR the one on Lexington at ~50th St), but for either $129 is not a bad deal, but i think you do a bit better if you want to give PRICELINE a try... perhaps $120 or less for a midtown hotel.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. sn0wie Posted January 8, 2013 Author Report Posted January 8, 2013 Hurray! Okay, the $129 is 569 Lexington Ave. Queen bed, yadayada. Decent reviews, 4*. I want to keep a 4*--and yes, I've read the guides on how to appropriately bid :). Do you perhaps have any suggestions the best area to stay (East/West/Upper W) to hit the Met/Guggenheim/Museum of History? I truly know little of the area, and would like walking distance. (Also, is taxi a dumb idea to and from the airport or should we just hit the ever-exciting metro? Airtran to Jamaica to Penn Station..so ideally somewhat close to Penn Station if we do that)I could use the below link anytime up to that date, but I'm thinking the earlier I PRICELINE (or HOTWIRE) the better (some fashion convention is going on I believe). Apologies for all the questions, and I greatly appreciate your suggestions, advice, and time.

sn0wie Posted January 9, 2013 Author Report Posted January 9, 2013 They've been clicked and will be used...just trying to figure out best regions etc (sweet hotel, short walking distance). Ty =)

MTE, MTW, TS, CPS and/or ESB. I would start by looking at these zones to determine if each will work for your needs (you can also look at the priceline hotel list to see hotels that have been reported to the board in each of these zones to get an idea of what you might expect). From there determine how much of a discount you would need from the 'known' $129 rate at the Doubletee to determine your maximum bid and we can then suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know your thoughts/questions. sn0wie Posted January 9, 2013 Author Report Posted January 9, 2013 It's not that I need a giant discount; it's more that I'd like to use the bidding and see if success can be had (lower/same price, nicer place). After narrowing it all down, it looks like CPS has the best location/what I want. These 4*s look fantastic, and nicer than the place with two trees. Looks like there's a subway there too to magically get to JFK.NYC Le Paker Meridien6 Columbus Circle Jumeirah Essex House Westin Essex HouseNew York City (Upper West Side)4* Empire Hotel--this one looks great too, and a nice location..this almost looks...too nice. 5* Chatwal in TS looks to be the only 5* to bid in the area--looks pretty good, but I'm assuming this isn't worth it.
thereuare Posted January 9, 2013 Report Posted January 9, 2013 So do you only want to bid CPS, TS and UWS... or do you want to include any of the other suggested zones (MTW, MTE, ESB) at the 4 star level? The more zones you include the better chances of landing the best/least expensive deal. I'll also add that your chance of winning a 4* hotel in the CPS is very low... this zone almost always costs somewhat more than other areas of the city (at the 4* level)Please confirm the zones you'd like to bid and your maximum bid and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. sn0wie Posted January 9, 2013 Author Report Posted January 9, 2013 Argh.Well, I guess if you suggest it I'll bid at most $130/night and include each region (MTW, MTE, ESB, CPS, TS, UWS)--
