Priceline Hotel: Priceline vs. Hotwire Bidding

I just discovered your site and it is so informative!

I'm going to try my luck at the name your own price for a 4 night stay in San Juan - Feb. 14-18 (first time, fingers crossed). Ideally I'd like to stay at La Concha or the El San Juan..

First, do you recommend going with Priceline or Hotwire for the bidding? I've noticed the hotels vary a little between sites?

Second, if you are suggesting going with Priceline..Do you compare the amenities they give you to the amenities you've listed on the Hotwire Hotels? I couldn't find amenities descriptions for Priceline hotels?

Third, What * level should I choose? 4* or Resort?

Fourth, is there a price you would recommend starting with in order to help secure one of these hotels?

Thank you so much for any feedback you can provide..And I’m sorry if this has already been outlined..I've tried reading as many threads as I could.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

If you haven't seen this thread yet, i'd start here: I've Never Used Priceline or Hotwire.

The 'short' version is that if you're willing to accept any hotel in the zone at the minimum star rating you select then PRICELINE is usually little cheaper than hotwire... on the other side of the coin HOTWIRE gives you the ability to take a guess as to the hotel being offered as well as tells you certain amenities that the hotel offers and/or shows you review ratings from previous guests, which can help you target a specific property and/or ensure that the hotel you want is well reviewed and/or has any specific amenities that you're seeking for this stay.

I did do a quick HOTWIRE search for your dates and what i believe to be the Marriott is offered for $175/nite and what i'm guessing is the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel and Casino (NOTE: this is not the same property as the Sheraton Old San Juan) is offered for $163/nite. While you can try bidding on PRICELINE, i'll add that neither the La Concha or the El San Juan are the most frequently won hotels in this area, and odds favor that you'll more likely then not receive some other property then one of these two.

Let us know your thoughts/questions and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. As well, what is your maximum budget (per nite before taxes/fees) for this trip?

Thank you so much for the link to the previous thread and for explaining all that you did.

When looking around on priceline prior to finding your site, I'd found the El San Juan for $228/n. So ideally I'd wanted to try finding a hotel rate lower than that - no specific budget otherwise, just ideally wanted a 4*.

That being said, my dates are flexible. We're just looking for around 4 nights in the month of February. Do you have any suggestions for bettering my chances for the El San Juan, La Concha, or Intercontinental? If you just don't think it's possible since they aren't awarded often that it totally fine, just figured I'd ask.

Thank you again!

Since your dates are flexible, you could look at the amenity combinations that each has used in the past as per the Hotwire Hotel List, then search for various 4 nite stay dates that are acceptable to you to see if anything with those amenity set(s) is seen. The La Concha is seldom see, but the Inter-Continental is won somewhat often (and the El San Juan 'sometimes' won, but less then the InterContinental)

If you find any potential matches let us know the dates and we'll try to confirm what you think you're seeing.

Perfect!

So I tried the dates: 2/8-2/11. And have compared them to your list of hotel amenities and there is a hotel listed for $142/n that looks like it matches up to either the El San Juan or the Caribe Hilton..but more the El San Juan. Would you mind telling me if i'm doing this right, and you agree?

Thank you again! Once I get the hang of this, I should be all set.
