andmilne Posted September 25, 2012 Report Posted September 25, 2012 Hey Guys, I will be in New York for a wedding, of which two days I need to find a hotel. I have been to NY once before and stayed around the Gramercy area. My bf and I are wanting to stay around Midtown, but are open to options. Mostly we want to be around shops, bars, and some city. Cabs can easily be taken elsewhere. We'd like to get the best for our money, so we are open to Soho, Midtown, etc, just as long as it's close to the city and around walking distance to things to do and see. I found a MidTown east area hotel for $256 a night with the following amenities :4-star Hotel in Midtown EastThis Hotel features the following amenities:Fitness Center Guests have access to exercise equipment; an additional charge may apply. Restaurant(s) Property offers at least one restaurant on the premises; hours and days of operation may vary. Business Center Guests have access to business equipment and services; an additional charge may apply. High-Speed Internet Access Guestrooms are equipped with high-speed Internet access; an extra charge may apply. Tennis Nearby Property is located within walking distance or a short drive of at least one tennis court; an extra charge typically applies.Accessible for the blind Braille or raised signage Accessible for the deaf TTY for telephone, visual or flashing fire alarm and vibrating alarm clock Accessible path of travel <amenity names only please... not descriptions> In-room accessibility Accessible path from the room entrance to the window, the bed and the bathroom; accessible hardware and minimal resistance to open the door; accessible temperature controls and window coverings Accessible bathroom Handicapped parking Roll-in shower Based on the HotWire list, I think it may be the hotel below4* Inter-Continental The Barclay (previously 4.5*)I am open to options but I just wanted to ask for suggestions on possible match ups to hotels there under $300 and preferably 4 stars or higher. Thanks!Andrea
AaronJB Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 Welcome to Betterbidding. This is the cheapest 4* listing that I'm seeing for these dates; my guess would be the Grand Hyatt or Intercontinental Barclay.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
andmilne Posted September 26, 2012 Author Report Posted September 26, 2012 Thanks for the response, AaronJB. I will be using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to purchase. Do you think I should try bidding on priceline for a Midtown East hotel? I need 4 stars and anything in the Midtown Area around 200$. I saw some were able to snag the Waldorf-Astoria for 150$, my top preference would be the Intercontinental Barclay at under 200$... what strategy would you recommend? Thanks!
thereuare Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 Please list all acceptable zones, by PRICELINE name, as well as your maximum bid, and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
andmilne Posted September 26, 2012 Author Report Posted September 26, 2012 Acceptable zone would be anything in Midtown- East. Max willing to spend is 240$. Getting rejection when I go in at 175$, don't know what to do after that. Using your PRICELINE link.
andmilne Posted September 26, 2012 Author Report Posted September 26, 2012 EDIT: I'd like to add that we are looking for an area in NY that is close to some nightlife, convenient to the train/subway and east transport, and has some attractions and artsy areas close by. We are a couple in our late 20's. Open to areas/suggestions.Also, found a hotel on HotWire in Midtown East for 256 a night. Amenities are4-star Hotel in Midtown EastThis Hotel features the following amenities:Fitness Center Guests have access to exercise equipment; an additional charge may apply.Restaurant(s) Property offers at least one restaurant on the premises; hours and days of operation may vary.Business Center Guests have access to business equipment and services; an additional charge may apply.High-Speed Internet Access Guestrooms are equipped with high-speed Internet access; an extra charge may apply.Accessible for the blind Braille or raised signageAccessible for the deaf TTY for telephone, visual or flashing fire alarm and vibrating alarm clockIn-room accessibility Accessible path from the room entrance to the window, the bed and the bathroom; accessible hardware and minimal resistance to open the door; accessible temperature controls and window coveringsAccessible bathroom Raised toilet, hand-held shower and grab bars at the tub and toiletRoll-in shower Bathroom has a roll-in showerRecommended:In 75% of Hotwire customer reviews.Any ideas what this hotel is? Do you think we could get cheaper in this area at 4 stars for these dates?
thereuare Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 For the average user, at the 4* level most midtown zones MTE, MTW, TS, CPS and ESB work well and are convenient to transportation... are all of these acceptable?Best guess for the HOTWIRE property above is the InterContinental Barclay or the Grand Hyatt.Do you want to go with the HOTWIRE offer OR do you want to continue with PRICELINE and bid up to $240? If PRICELINE, are all the zones above acceptable or do you want to continue bidding only MTE?Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
andmilne Posted September 26, 2012 Author Report Posted September 26, 2012 I am open to using either PRICELINE or HOTWIRE through your links on the board. Would go through either to get a better deal. For PRICELINE, all those areas are acceptable except Times Square, I'd prefer to stay away from crazy touristy areas. Looking for something more artsy, good nightlife, etc but close to the subway.
thereuare Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 So to confirm, the current plan is to bid for a 4* hotel in any of these zones: MTE, MTW, CPS and ESB with a maximum bid for $240? andmilne Posted September 27, 2012 Author Report Posted September 27, 2012 According to the FAQ, a rebid zone is somewhere that doesn't have the star levels at or above 4 (since I am wanting a 4*?) I only see one zone that does not have 4 stars and it is not on the map as an exclusive choice when rebidding. What zones am I adding after the MTW and MTE?
thereuare Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 Sounds like you're either using the board's Hotel Lists or the retail side of PRICELINE to determine your re-bid zones, neither of which is correct. Try the following...1) Use the PRICELINE search box on the upper right of this page, enter 'New York City, NY' and your dates, and click "GO".2) List each zone that is offered in this region. 3) Next to each zone list the highest star rating offered in the zone. The way to determine the highest star rating offered in the zone is by selecting the first zone i the list, then scrolling down to see the highest star rating selectable (ie- not greyed out). NEXT UNcheck the selected zone, place a checkmark in the next zone, and repeat the process for each zone in the region. Each time you take note of the highest star rating in the zone, make sure that only ONE zone is selected above.4) post your findings and we'll take it from thereIf you don't follow the above just post back and we'll break it down further. andmilne Posted September 28, 2012 Author Report Posted September 28, 2012 Ok so, for example......Select 4* MTE and ESBBid $120, if rejected add queensborough bridgeBid $130, if rejected add upper east sideBid $140, if rejected add morningside heightsBid $145, if rejected add lower east sideBid $150, if rejected add long island cityBid $155, if rejected add coney island .Bid $160, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE
andmilne Posted September 28, 2012 Author Report Posted September 28, 2012 Bid up to 240$ and was unsuccessful, any ideas if these dates are going to be expensive regardless or if they will come down in price?
thereuare Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 Unfortunately there is no telling if rates will drop, or move even higher, between now and your stay.HOTWIRE does have a 4* hotel in the ESB zone at $257/nite, not too much higher than you have already bid, and it has a VERY GOOD 4.5/5.0 TA rating (if that's worth the extra $20/nite over what you have already bid)... possibly the Hotel Chandler? buckeyejer Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 Hello,I am jumping in this thread because I'm looking for the exact same dates as the OP & open to pretty much the same areas. Thanks for your bidding strategy above - I followed it and bid up to $250 but unfortunately I was unsuccessful also. I do have a backup hotel that I have booked with full cancellation ability so I am quite flexible now.Are there times where using priceline can be great deals booking only 1 or 2 days before your stay? For instance, I am noticing there are some great deals in NYC for tonight & tomorrow night right now on the hotel search engines. Thanks,Jerry
AaronJB Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 buckeyejer,Please post a new thread with your date/s of travel and desired budget and we would be happy to offer suggestions. The FAQ discusses purchase timing; if it's a busy period, there is always the possibility rates could stay flat or go higher as it gets closer to the stay.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
