Shane333 Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 I use the Betterbidding PRICELINE strategy for my annual October trip to NYC (using the links of course).Looks like things have changed on Priceline zones and I'm not sure if I'm safe to use the following as stooge zones(the ones with no 4* hotels that you can enter to re-bid right away).I'm looking for Chelsea or Soho 4* and have already used the following zones to allow me to re-bid:LESLong Island CityMSGQueensbridgeUESIs it safe to also use?:HarlemBrooklynMy memory might play tricks on me, but I recall using an airport zone or two in years past.
thereuare Posted September 18, 2012 Report Posted September 18, 2012 Welcome (officially) to BetterBidding! If you haven't yet please start by reading your messages. When bidding 4* in NYC some of the zones above are re-bid zones and some of those you have listed are not. However, you need to know how to determine these yourself, for as you point out the re-bid zones can/do change, and therefore should be checked before you start every bidding cycle. If you're read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and are still confused, try the following:1) Use the PRICELINE search box on the upper right of this page, enter 'New York City, NY' and your dates, and click "GO".2) List each zone that is offered in this region. 3) Next to each zone list the highest star rating offered in the zone. The way to determine the highest star rating offered in the zone is by selecting the first zone i the list, then scrolling down to see the highest star rating selectable (ie- not greyed out). NEXT UNcheck the selected zone, place a checkmark in the next zone, and repeat the process for each zone in the region. Each time you take note of the highest star rating in the zone, make sure that only ONE zone is selected above.4) post your findings and we'll take it from thereSee if you can determine your SIX re-bid zones and confirm them with the board. If you don't follow the above just post back and we'll break it down further. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
Shane333 Posted September 19, 2012 Author Report Posted September 19, 2012 Thanks thereuare, refreshed myself on the bidding strategy and see what you mean. I'm not actually new to the site, but forgot my password and the notice went to junk mail so I had to register anew. I won the Hilton Fashion District, will post it as a win.
Shane333 Posted September 19, 2012 Author Report Posted September 19, 2012 online rate is showing $320 so didn't save nearly as much as usual. I wanted to try staying in Chelsea or Soho instead of our usual MTE or MTW and used the re-bidding strategy starting at $200. Lesson learned is that to save the max money, you can't fixate on a particular zone or two. When we first started going to NYC, we sought out mid-town for the area's safety mostly. As Chelsea and Soho emerged in the last 10-15 years (maybe earlier, we may not be early adopters!), we found ourselves taking the subway down there every morning for breakfast and shopping etc... One time we landed Gild Hall which was a cool experience but too far downtown to repeat.I'm excited to be trying a new neighborhood, and it's walking distance to some of our favourite haunts. I've saved so much money on Priceline over the years (much thanks to this site too!), that I can't be mad at all.
AaronJB Posted September 19, 2012 Report Posted September 19, 2012 Congrats on your success. :)Sorry to hear that the result isn't the deal hoped, but glad to hear that you are looking forward to your stay and looking forward to trying out the area.Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
