Do you think I could have got a better rate if I booked last minute? I've been trying on priceline for weeks with no luck though

There is no way to know whether or not rates will improve (or go the other direction) last minute, although you're getting into the period of time where it's getting to be last minute - and this is traditionally a busy time in NYC.
