Strategy for longer stays?

I plan on getting a hotel late next year (too early to think about a bidding strategy) in new york city. I intend to stay for at least 5 nights. Is it better to try and get one room for the entire stay or only try for a few days at a time? I'm fine if I have to switch hotels (sounds fun!).

If you are looking for later next year, I would start beginning to look and plan in the Spring, as September through around December 15th (especially around 11/25-12/14) is a particularly expensive period in the city (at least traditionally.)

Rates are really on a case-by-case basis, so if rates are consistent (good or bad) across the 5 night stay, then it's not really worth splitting the stay. If rates are significantly different for the front half of your stay vs the back half, then splitting the stay would be an option to consider.

Or you could try switching hotels (if you don't mind doing so) from the standpoint of having a different "home base" for each half of your stay, making it easier to explore different parts of the city/structure your trip.
