Hi, hoping you guys have some suggestions for me or it might be that this trip will not be possible. We are a family of 4 with two basically teenage kids, had no idea that hotels were so expensive in NYC in October when we came up with the bright idea for trip during fall break from school! I think my problem is that I am needed the whole hotel budget including taxes to be ideally around 1200, but no more than 1500 at most, and have to have room big enough for all 4 of us, in an area easy to get around and safe with good food options. Don't need 4 start amenities, as really, what family of 4 could afford 24 hour room service anyway. But I am also not the motel 6 sort of person either. Usually stay at something like a newer Hampton Inn when traveling in the US with both kids. But geez, the Hampton in NYC is like $450 bucks a night. So am i right in thinking priceline is out for me as I can't specifiy 2 beds, unless the single room rate was low enough to book 2 rooms. Somehow not thinking that would be possible. I wanted to stay in NYC and not NJ as would prefer not to spend so much time trying to get anywhere. Have looked at hotels in TS, ME, MW, CPS, ESB, but even on hotwire, the rates are > 350 for even a 3 star. Any suggestions?

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

Unfortunately, this is a crazy period for NYC, as is much of the Fall and especially towards the November/December period. The issue with PRICELINE and NYC is that it only guarantees one bed/double occupancy - nowhere is that more true than NYC, where rooms are often tiny and rooms with two bed usually go for a premium. HOTWIRE is a better bet because you can indicate the amount of people in the party and ensure some form of bedding. However, the problem becomes quad occupancy often goes for more expensive than the already expensive rates. HOTWIRE is - unfortunately - the best bet in terms of trying to have space for the whole party. PRICELINE would be cheaper, but you definitely run a very high risk of getting one bed and a room that's going to be very cramped for four.

Unfortunately, I think the options in terms of trying to get under $1500 are staying outside the city and commuting in, taking one day off the trip, or risking one bed w/PRICELINE.

If you haven't yet, please start by reading your messages.

You could get a decent, centrally located 3* hotel for the four of your for about $1650 all-in... otherwise you're looking at 2 star rated hotels and likely a downtown/lesser location. While you mention you don't want to stay in NJ, for comparison purposes a 4* hotel in NJ with an easy/short commute to NYC would run you $1050... and there lies the trade-off between price and convenience.
