My first visit to NYC. Have bid up to 180 for a 4* in MTE, MTW, ESB, TS, CPS and got no luck. Am I too late for bidding? My preferred budget would be 150 per night and below. My requirement would be a decent hotel room (preferred 4*) and close to PATH train. I am also considering living in the Jersey City as along as communication to Manhattan is convenient. However, not sure how to guarantee that since I can not pick the hotel while bidding. Any suggestions and what price I should expect for a 4* hotel in Manhattan or in Jersey city? Any other place outside Manhattan I should consider? Thanks!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Am I too late for bidding? My preferred budget would be 150 per night and below.

No, it's just that these are expensive dates in the city and at the moment $180 is not enough for a 4* hotel in these zones.

...and close to PATH train.

The PATH train is the train to New Jersey... do you need to be near a PATH train OR is it the NYC Subway that you want to ensure that you're close to?

I am also considering living in the Jersey City as along as communication to Manhattan is convenient. However, not sure how to guarantee that since I can not pick the hotel while bidding.

All the 'known' 4* hotels in the Jersey City zone are close to mass transit to NYC, but the most commonly won hotel in the recent past is the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken (the northern end of the PRICELINE zone) which is not near a PATH train, but there is a bus stop right near the hotel that will take you to/from NYC. If you do need to get to the PATH from this hotel you could take take a taxi (maybe ~$10) or the lightrail which stops about 2 blocks from the hotel.

Any suggestions and what price I should expect for a 4* hotel in Manhattan or in Jersey city? Any other place outside Manhattan I should consider?

You have gone as high as $180, which currently is still not enough, although $200-$220 might be enough for a 4* hotel in Manhattan in the zones you've previously bid, although i'm not sure how flexible your budget is.

Many thanks.

Sorry, I think I mean prefer to be close to the sub way instead of PATH (and this is one reason I want to bid for a 4* hotel. I've read some other posts which suggests some 3.5* hotels could be far from sub way).

If I can get a 4* for under 150 in Jersey city, I might choose to live there.

Otherwise, 200 would be my maximum (downgrade to a 3.5* is acceptable but really prefer it to be close to sub way or other public transportation).

Any suggestions for how to bid for both the Jersey city and Manhattan? Thanks.

You can get a 4* hotel in the Jersey City zone for less than $150/nite, but it will most likely be in the northern part of the zone in Weehawken, which is not near a PATH station, but there is a bus stop nearby that will take you into the city (NOTE: bus typically stops running ~1:30am, not sure how long you intend to stay out)

Alternately, you should be able to get a 4* hotel in Manhattan for under $200/nite for these dates... there is a 4* hotel appearing on HOTWIRE in the ESB zone for $178/nite which i'm guessing is the St Giles the Court. This property has not yet been reported to the board thru PRICELINE, so if you'd like you could try bidding PRICELINE again up to $175/nite, then if rejected take the HOTWIRE offer (or just take the HOTWIRE offer if you think you'd like this hotel)

Just looked at PRICELINE and it looks like the Sheraton is booking up but the Westin isn't. On the List View PRICELINE page the Westin is at 179 a night named which is a good rate. You run the risk on name your own price of getting the Sheraton which isn't in the best location. I live in Jersey City and its a quick trip to NYC.

Also the W Hoboken has a great price at 184 a night for the 4 nights

Those are good rates for the W Hoboken and Westin, but as much as i like the Jersey City/Hoboken area, i would sooner go with the 4* ESB property for the same price (if still available) so that you'll be directly in Manhattan.

Bid up to 145 for Jersey city and didn't get anything. Took the Westin on priceline for 179 per night. Have tried biding 180 for Manhattan but not successful. Thanks for the help.

Probably too late for OP, but for others interested, there is a deal at Doubletree Metropolitan for $164 per night for OP's dates and 1 queen bed non-smoking:

http://www.travelzoo.com/hotels/new-york/-119-169-Manhattan-4-Star-Hotel-incl-Cocktails-45-Off-1260100/

Note that it is still available as of the time of this posting, despite the message in red that it sold out. I booked this for Sept 1-4 when the deal was first posted on Travelzoo at about $162/night.

For Hilton HHonors fans, there is also a double/triple points offer out there right now, but you must register first.

And sorry for the off-topic, but I am too not finding anything in Manhattan for Labor Day in the $150-$160 range for 4* by bidding.
