nic01002 Posted August 15, 2012 Report Posted August 15, 2012 I am planning a trip with my 2 kids to visit family in downtown NYC. I know Hotwire is reccommended here for people going to NYC with kids, but I really need a good deal and am willing to share a bed. I know there are some hotels in NYC that don't allow kids. Are there ant areas/zones that don't include any of the "no kids" hotels? I wanted to stay in the financial district, but it is not a must. I know the Andaz is a no kid hotel and is in the financial area, but it is a 4 star, what are the chances of getting that if I only pick a two star? The prices seem to be all around the same, no matter the star rating in that area. I also am willing to stay a short drive outside of NYC (NJ, etc.) but don't have any clue what would be a nice, safe area to pick. Any suggestions?
mtbscott Posted August 15, 2012 Report Posted August 15, 2012 I've never heard of any "no-kid" hotels in New York, in fact I just got through reading some family friendly reviews of the Andaz Wall Street on TripAdvisor. I would think that aside from "shared" facilities like hostels possibly having age restrictions, laws against discrimination would preclude "no kids."
nic01002 Posted August 15, 2012 Author Report Posted August 15, 2012 Well I'd be happy to be wrong about it. Perhaps it wasn't the Andaz I was thinking of. Although there are plenty of hotels, b&b's that don't allow children, so I'm not sure about the discrimination thing. I do know when I searched hotels in NYC on Hotwire that there were several hotels that said, "exceeds max children", even when I changed it to one child. Maybe it had to do with availabilty...
AaronJB Posted August 15, 2012 Report Posted August 15, 2012 An issue with 'exceeds max children' when searching on something like Expedia would be more likely a matter of occupancy restrictions. In NYC, rooms are often smaller or much smaller than normal, to the point where some rooms may only have an occupancy max of 2. There shouldn't be an issue with hotels accepting children. With PRICELINE, there's definitely an issue with the possibility of getting one bed. What would be your desired budget per night for this stay and what are the dates of travel?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
mtbscott Posted August 15, 2012 Report Posted August 15, 2012 If your relatives are in lower Manhattan, consider Brooklyn. Even at normal "rack rates" you'll be much cheaper in general there than in Manhattan, and you can get a two bed room for sure. I think Priceline is a great option for singles and couples, not so much for family travelling.
nic01002 Posted August 15, 2012 Author Report Posted August 15, 2012 Dates are 8/31-9/2. I really want under $130 if at all possible, which is why I'm kind of open to outside of Manhattan. It just needs to have access to Public transit as I have prepaid for two days of Parking in Manhattan with a groupon. Will look at Brooklyn. I don't mind one bed, my kids are small.
mtbscott Posted August 15, 2012 Report Posted August 15, 2012 I just did a quick search for your dates from the HOTWIRE link, and also checked Choicehotels.com (Comfort Inn, Sleep Inn, Quality Inn, etc) and can't find anything for less than $160ish a night in Brooklyn or lower Manhattan. The problem is occupancy restrictions as AaronJB mentioned. If you put on the query that you have two children, it's only going to offer rooms that allow that many people. You could try to just book a single bed room and take your chances of getting caught, but I think NYC is pretty strict about their hotel laws.
