CabbagePatch Posted August 8, 2012 Report Posted August 8, 2012 Hi there,We're coming over to NY in November for a long weekend, and whilst we have the option of staying with a friend for the whole trip, as it's our first wedding anniversary we'd prefer a hotel for a couple of nights. As we have a back up place to stay though, I guess we can go fairly risky with our plans e.g. bidding last minute.Dates we're like a hotel are: November 4th and 5thAreas: open to suggestion as to where we'd get the best deal, i.e. nicest hotel for lowest price. We're both young and willing to walk/get public transport to areas of interest, it's not our first trip to NY either, so we won't be doing some of the traditionally touristy things. I guess somewhere quietish but not too far from things would be good. Budget: ideally about $150-200 a nightPriceline or Hotwire? either! whatever would give me the best deal!Star: ideally 3 1/2 star plus Is that all you need to know? and if so, what would you recommend doing? Thanks,CP
thereuare Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 Since your goal is the nicest hotel for the lowest price, did you want to first try for a 4* hotel up to your limit, then if rejected try for a 3.5* up to your limit... OR is your goal the least expensive 3.5* or better hotel?Whichever star rating you decide to go for first, why not include all acceptable zones and let PRICELINE assign the one with the least expensive price? Which zone(s) are you willing to accept? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. mtbscott Posted August 14, 2012 Report Posted August 14, 2012 If you're still looking, thought I'd point out that your weekend is the dates for the NYC Marathon, one of the biggest crowds of the year. Hotel prices are generally ramped up for that, and many "central" hotels will already be full. If you can't change your dates, prepare to pay more and/or be less picky about location.
CabbagePatch Posted August 22, 2012 Author Report Posted August 22, 2012 Ah...I had noticed that hotels were more expensive that weekend than the ones either side an I couldn't work out why. Thanks for the knowledge! Perhaps I should book something sooner rather than later.Thereuare: the goal is to get the best value, so yes targeting a 4* first would be ideal. I'll definitely use the links, but I guess where i'm looking for advice most is the areas to target and/or avoid? Thanks again!CP
thereuare Posted August 23, 2012 Report Posted August 23, 2012 As per above, given the Marathon (and current rates) a 3.5* or better may likely be a tough win at $200 or under in any zone.Your best chance at a 4* at $200 or less would be Downtown, and while we will include other midtown locations, would your preference be a 4* hotel in the Downtown zone (which is a slightly less desirable location to midtown) OR would you prefer a lesser rated hotel with a more centrally located midtown location?Let us know your thoughts/preference and we'll advise accordingly. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board... and please click each of these links before replying.Thanks. CabbagePatch Posted August 24, 2012 Author Report Posted August 24, 2012 Links clicked :-)I think we'd probably prefer a 4* Downtown to be honest. As I said, we're both able to travel easily so location is not such an issue. We had contemplated staying in Jersey City (my company has an office there so I know a very convenient hotel), but I think it would be a lot easier to be in Manhattan really. Thanks so much for your help,CP
thereuare Posted August 25, 2012 Report Posted August 25, 2012 While your best chance at a 4* is Downtown, did you also want to include other zones?MTE, MTW, TS, CPS and ESB are the most popular and frequently bid zone at the 4* level. Other 4* zones often bid include Soho and Chelsea. Are any/all of these also acceptable, as the more zones you include the more hotels you give a chance to accept your bid. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board.Let us know the information above and we'll advise accordingly. CabbagePatch Posted August 28, 2012 Author Report Posted August 28, 2012 Hi Thereuare,As I've said before, I'm really quite easy on location. I don't know NYC well enough to be able to pass judgement on whether an area is preferable or not, but I am willing to travel if I need to get places. I'm from London which is so much more spread out, and so in comparison getting about NYC is a doddle! All we want is a niceish hotel which doesn't break the bank. I realise that even this is a lot to ask but just want to get the best deal I guess! I don't like paying full price for things :-)ThanksCP

CabbagePatch Posted August 30, 2012 Author Report Posted August 30, 2012 Thanks so much! However, please can I confirm the rebid zones? I can only find 6: Coney Island, Long Island, Lower East Side, Morningshide Heights, Queensborough Bridge and Upper East... which one am I missing? Thanks again, CP
AaronJB Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 I'm only seeing 6 now as well - possibly a recent update in one of the zones?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Since the original strategy was posted 4* bidding was added to the MSG zone, so that zone is no longer a re-bid zone for NYC, and there are currently only SIX re-bid zones available when bidding for a 4* hotel in NYC.Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
