I had a $5/night bonus cash discount that I used, so I really only paid $50/night. I started my bid off at $45 ($40 + $5 bonus cash), escalated it to $51 ($46 + 5 bonus cash), then finally won at $55 ($50 + $5 with bonus cash). I was able to bid multiple times within the 24 hour period by using the tips in the sticky on this forum — basically I just kept deliberately selecting cities I didn't want but only had hotels lower than my minimum star rating (3.5) so I could place additional bids. I gauged my bids by using the bid mapper on this site to see what others had paid for hotels in my preferred location. I started with the lowest successful bid listed on the bid mapper and bumped it up in increments of $5 from there.
