javster Posted July 29, 2012 Report Posted July 29, 2012 Hi there. I'm in New York for six nights Sept 12-18. I'm looking for a hotel in either Madison Square Garden, Times Square, Chelsea or Empire State Building area. I'm guessing hotel rates are quite high during this period. I was hoping to pay around the $200 mark or less, but what do you think? Is that too little for September and also the areas? Maybe up to $230? I don't mind staying at 3*.
thereuare Posted July 29, 2012 Report Posted July 29, 2012 Yes, this is an expensive time of year in NYC and rates are high. However, i do think you should be able to get a 3* in one of the zones above for $230 or less. To get started, are you willing to pay more for a higher rated hotel OR is your goal the least expensive 3* or better for this trip? In other words did you want to first try for a 4* up to your limit, then if rejected try for a 3.5* up to your limit, then if rejected try for a 3* property... OR is your goal the least expensive 3* or better for this stay? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. javster Posted July 29, 2012 Author Report Posted July 29, 2012 I was hoping that $230 would get me a 4* hotel so definitely wanted to try for a 4* up to my limit first, then try for 3.5*, etc. I have managed to get New Yorker the last two trips to New York via Hotwire and I was really happy with that result. I can't remember exactly how much I ended up paying last time I was in NY (back in November), but I believe it was just around $175 or something. Seems it's so much more expensive now. Also, I wanted to mention that I arrive on September 12 and leave September 18. However, on Saturday, September 15, we are going to Atlantic City for one day and we'll be staying there overnight. So I am thinking that I could break up the trip as September 12 to September 15. Then September 16-18. That way I don't pay for September 15. I don't mind if I have to switch hotels (although would be good to get the same one, but I know that there's no guarantees). I was just thinking of leaving my luggage with the luggage deposit at the hotel for September 15. Maybe splitting up dates might be better price wise as well since Saturday night isn't included. If you think I should try a different starting $$$ level for the Wed-Fri compared to Sun-Mon bids, let me know.
thereuare Posted July 29, 2012 Report Posted July 29, 2012 I wouldn't go re-arranging your plans just yet, but weekend nites in NYC are usually less expensive than mid-week nites (so excluding the Saturday nite in Manhattan isn't likely to benefit you much... although the shorter stays might help). On the other hand, Atlantic City is usually much more expensive on weekend nites and less expensive midweek. Do you have plans in Atlantic City that require you to be there on Saturday nite.. as it might save you some money on both hotel stays if you go to Atlantic City on a midweek nite and remain in Manhattan for the weekend dates.Let us know your thoughts and we'll explore further. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. javster Posted July 29, 2012 Author Report Posted July 29, 2012 yeah, we are seeing Madonna in Atlantic City on the 15th, so it kinda ended up in the middle of my NY trip.
AaronJB Posted July 29, 2012 Report Posted July 29, 2012 9/14-18 (and especially 9/15-18) seems better than 9/12-14/15;For 9/15-18, I'm seeing a 4* in Chelsea-MSG w/4-star Hotel in Chelsea - Madison Square GardenThis Hotel features the following amenities:Fitness Center Restaurant(s) Business Center High-Speed Internet Access Accessible for the blind Accessible for the deaf Free Internet Accessible path of travel In-room accessibility Accessible bathroom Roll-in showerFor $208 ($212 for 9/14-18) The prices you see may vary. My guess is that this may be a new amenity set for the Ramada New Yorker. That property is a 3* on PRICELINE, and given the HOTWIRE rate, you may be able to get a 3* in the zone for $165-190 for these dates, but then the first two/three nights would be more expensive. Please let us know if you have any questions before bidding.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
javster Posted July 30, 2012 Author Report Posted July 30, 2012 Hi there. I tried using Priceline and bidding but kept getting rejected. I did see this hotel you mentioned today on Hotwire (I couldn't see it yesterday) and it was $230 so I decided to just bite the bullet and book for the whole week at this price and not bother breaking up the dates and skipping Saturday. I thought it'd just be more complicated that way. So, yeah, $230 for Sept 12-18 through Hotwire (I used your link) at the New Yorker (third stay in three visits at this hotel which I am happy about). I know this is a Priceline board, so I'm not sure if you can transfer this winning bid to Hotwire. Thanks for all your help!9/14-18 (and especially 9/15-18) seems better than 9/12-14/15;For 9/15-18, I'm seeing a 4* in Chelsea-MSG w/4-star Hotel in Chelsea - Madison Square GardenThis Hotel features the following amenities:Fitness Center Restaurant(s) Business Center High-Speed Internet Access Accessible for the blind Accessible for the deaf Free Internet Accessible path of travel In-room accessibility Accessible bathroom Roll-in showerFor $208 ($212 for 9/14-18) The prices you see may vary.
