JnDMcBidder Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 I am new to bidding and I have read most of the FAQs and they all say that you need to know what rooms tend to go for at that time. I have nto seemed to find a guid to figure out what that number is. I would like to head to NYC for one night 10/13/2012 prior to my cruise. I am willing to stay anywhere but would love to stay in SoHo / Financial District as I have never seen the statue of Liberty. I am willing to go down to a 3* as we get closer. I have no real budget but would like to get a great deal on a great hotel, but don't know what that is and suggestions on how to figure that out I would appreciate. Thanks,JnD
thereuare Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 Welcome to BetterBidding! You can start with our BiddingHelper.com tool (also search box at the top of the page) which will show you a bidding screen from PRICELINE as well as 'opaque' rates from HOTWIRE and regular retail rates from Hotels.com. All of this information can be used to help determine what a room would cost thru conventional booking channels... then you can discount it from there. You'll like need to be somewhere ~$200/nite for a 4* hotel in the Downtown zone for your nite above... is this within your expected budget or would you sooner look to lower your star rating and/or consider other zones? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. JnDMcBidder Posted July 13, 2012 Author Report Posted July 13, 2012 Given what I see as last minute prices of 100-125 I was hoping to be around 150 and I am willing to be anywhere safe in the city that is a short cab ride (or within 30 minute walk to things). Also, my 4 stars is flexible I just don't want to be at the Flatotel under any circumstances. As it gets closer 200 isn't out of the question I just was hoping to get a better deal.
thereuare Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 With just one nite in the city you'll most likely leave the hotel in the morning and go out for the entire day, not returning until the it's time to go to bed at nite, maybe returning once before dinner to freshen up, drop of any bags you've accumulated while out, etc.So it basically will come down to what you want from this stay... midtown is a bit more convenient as more of the touristy sites are located here, but it is more expensive then say Downtown, where you also have reason to stay in this area as you mention you'd like to see the Statue of Liberty (other things to do downtown are Chinatown, Little Italy, Ground Zero, walk the Brooklyn Bridge)... also if you really are a Statue of Liberty fan you know that you can take the Staten Island Ferry from downtown to Staten Island, and you pass right by the Statue. The ferry is free and you can simply roundtrip it (takes about 30 minutes each way... and you'll have to get off at Staten Island and reboard, you can't simply stay on the boat)While at current prices i don't think a 4* hotel can be had for $150 or less, if you let us know which zones you're willing to accept we'll advise accordingly. The most commonly bid 4* zones are MTE, MTW, TS, CPS an ESB... Chelsea is also an option given your parameters, and as mentioned Downtown is a little less convenient but certainly do-able for a one nite and and the right price. Also, it is of course entirely up to you, and i'm not suggesting you need to get this done in the next 2 days, but this is a very busy (and expensive) time of year in NYC, i would not wait until last minute to confirm your reservation. Using MAPS and HOTELS.com select 'New York City' from the location box and UNCHECK everything except 4* and the month of October... you'll see that rates are usually more than $150/nite this time of year. Then UNCHECK Friday, Saturday and Sunday (thus only showing midweek rates) and you'll see even higher rates. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. JnDMcBidder Posted July 25, 2012 Author Report Posted July 25, 2012 Hi,I just wanted to give an update I keep trying to bid on this using my 7 rebid zones for Downtown/ Financial district only. I have upped my bid to 200. I now think I need help is 200 realistic? I am now also spreading my horizons to downtown, TS, ESB, MTE, MTW, and CPS. Thanks for any help
thereuare Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 Have you yet included TS, ESB, MTE, MTW, and CPS in your bidding (and if so did you bid up to $200 with these zones) OR have you not included these yet? Please use the requested PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your bidding, searches and travel purchases... and click each of these previous links before replying.Thanks. JnDMcBidder Posted July 26, 2012 Author Report Posted July 26, 2012 to date I have not included those as my primary desire is to be in Downtown so I can walk to see the statue for the first time; however I have been informed that the cruise ship will sail right by and not too far from the statue so my zone requirement is open at the 4* level.

JnDMcBidder Posted July 31, 2012 Author Report Posted July 31, 2012 Thanks for your help,I have done this strategy and was unable to secure a room, I may try the last portion of this again but will be booking the 4* downtown-soho for my dates on HOTWIRE for 205 if it doesn't work. I believe it is the Doubletree financial district which is 3.5* on PRICELINE which is why it hasn't popped. I will be using the HOTWIRE link to book this room. Thanks for your help
