Luna_chick Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 Hello... need some advice from the experts... can I do better than Hotwire for the criteria listed below?3.5* or 4*3-6 Aug (3 nights)Zones are flexible... going for general sightseeing so would like to stay close to Midtown, if possible. $150/night would be upper limit, $130/night or less would be ideal. Hotel doesn't have to be stellar, just clean and centrally located. I've read the re-bidding info and used the links! Thanks!
thereuare Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 Welcome to BetterBidding!PRICELINE is usually cheaper than HOTWIRE, so if you are flexible in the zone(s) you're willing to accept and don't need any specific amenities, you can likely do better than whatever HOTWIRE rates you're currently seeing.I think you can likely get a 4* within your $150 budget... are you willing to pay up to $150 for a 4* hotel OR would you prefer a 3.5* property if it were slightly cheaper? If you want to try for a 4* property first, did you want to try up to $150 OR us your $130 maximum bid (and would try for a 3.5* if failed at $130 for a 4*)?Let us know the above and we'll advise accordingly. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Luna_chick Posted July 5, 2012 Author Report Posted July 5, 2012 I would prefer a 3.5* at a slightly cheaper rate, if possible. If we could do less than $130 for a 3.5* that would be great. Suggestions are appreciated!
thereuare Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 When bidding 3.5* and lower in NYC:MTE - some 'known' hotels can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway... is this acceptable?CPS - has the Hudson Hotel, which while well located, has notoriously small rooms (~140 sq. ft.).. is this acceptable?Should we include either/both of these in a bidding strategy? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Luna_chick Posted July 5, 2012 Author Report Posted July 5, 2012 Let's keep Those as a last resort. Can you suggest a strategy without those two? Thanks!
thereuare Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 To confirm: at the 3.5* level MTW, ESB, TS, and MSG are all acceptable? If so...At the 3.5* level in NYC you have SIX re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 3.5* MTW, ESB, and MSG...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $103, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $108, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $113, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* TS...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $103, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $108, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $113, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, ESB, TS and MSG...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $118, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $123, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $128, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130Any questions feel free to ask. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. Luna_chick Posted July 7, 2012 Author Report Posted July 7, 2012 Bids were not accepted :( :( Suggestions?Confirming rebid zones...Upper EastConeyLong IslandLower East sideMorningsideQueensboroughThanks!!
thereuare Posted July 8, 2012 Report Posted July 8, 2012 Yes, your re-bid zones are correct (but always double check just before bidding)Do you want to next try for a 3.5* hotel including CPS and/or MTE, or increase to a 4* hotel and include these zones (since increasing to 4* eliminates the 'known' small rooms in the CPS and the hotel(s) with a longer walk to the subway. As noted above, i do think you can succeed at the 4* level at less than $150 if you include MTE and CPS.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Luna_chick Posted July 8, 2012 Author Report Posted July 8, 2012 New changes to the budget are now requiring us to make $130 our hard max. We are now willing to consider 3* if we can get them for around $100 or less. We can open up MTE and CPS... As last resorts. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
thereuare Posted July 9, 2012 Report Posted July 9, 2012 What did you want to try first... 3.5* including CPS and/or MTE... or a 3* hotel using the previous zones bid at the 3.5* level? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Luna_chick Posted July 9, 2012 Author Report Posted July 9, 2012 Let's just go with the 3* hotels... What $$ would be feasible? Is a win possible for these dates in the $100-$115 range? We can go up to $130 if needed, but would prefer it to be less.
Luna_chick Posted July 9, 2012 Author Report Posted July 9, 2012 Tried a new strategy and won the W New York (MTE) for $138/night. Only $8 above new budget, but 4*... happy with the trade off.
GLK Posted July 9, 2012 Report Posted July 9, 2012 What was the new strategy you tried to receive this hotel? Thanks
AaronJB Posted July 9, 2012 Report Posted July 9, 2012 Congrats on your success. :)Very nice win for this W property, and glad you are satisfied with the deal.Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
thereuare Posted July 11, 2012 Report Posted July 11, 2012 I'm glad you decided to put the bid just a bit more and landed this 4* property.I'll also add that you're also near my often recommended Ess-A-Bagel (Third Ave at 51st St) which has one of the best bagels in the city, makes for a nice, and relatively inexpensive, breakfast among local NYers.Have a great time in NYC!
