Lukester Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 Hoping to get a 4* in NYC, 24-28 July. The neighborhood doesn't really matter as we are going to do the tourist thing all over. Hoping to stay at or below $150 per day. Is that realistic for a 4* in NYC? Any and all advice appreciated. Thanks, Mr. Griswold
Lukester Posted July 20, 2005 Author Report Posted July 20, 2005 After reading some other posts, I see where priceline will not guarantee a double bed room. That is a must for us with a family of four and we don't want to go with two rooms. In addition, we will be flying space available on the airlines (I'm a furloughed pilot), so we will want to wait until the night prior to bid based on last minute guess of airline availability. We can cut the NYC visit to three days and downgrade to a 3* if necessary. Thanks again.
thenewbie Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 Welcome!Booking a hotel at the last minute may make getting 2 beds more difficult (and expensive) in NYC. If you know you will be there the last 3 days, and are willing to stay at 2 hotels, what I would do is book the last 3 nights now and book a refundable option for the 1st night that you can cancel the night before. The other option is waiting until the 23rd to book a room as needed, subject to availability. If you are looking to get one room for the 4 of you, the Beekman Tower has 1 bedroom suites available for $150.60/night for your dates. These suites have one bed and a pull out sofa in the living room. It has good reviews and more space than a typical NYC hotel room. You would need to search using 2 people, but it can accomodate 4 using the pull out sofa. If you wait a little while, thereuare may also have some additional advice for you.
thereuare Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 If you won't know if you will flying out until the nite before, i would hold-off on making any non-refundable reservation. What if you book the last 3 nites of the trip and can't get on a standby flight for that time as well? (or would that be unheard of given your (preferred?) status as a pilot?) Lukester Posted July 20, 2005 Author Report Posted July 20, 2005 Thank you for the quick responses. It is always a bit of a gamble flying space available, especially in the summer and with 4 traveling. Having said that, it looks pretty good that we will be able to get there, even if it takes a few flights. Does the Beekman Tower have a cancelation policy with that great rate? Simply click onto the link you replied and go? Getting excited about NYC. What was the bagel shop you recommended? Thanks, Luke
thereuare Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 The Beekman, booked thru THIS LINK, is fully refundable up until 72 hours before check-in date. The bagel shop i recommend is Ess-A-Bagel (51st St and Third Ave) and is a short walk from the Beekman. Lukester Posted July 20, 2005 Author Report Posted July 20, 2005 Another question about the rooms. How big is the bed and the pull-out couch? My wife and I are tall, my 16yo son is 6'2' and 14yo daughter is 5'9". I am concerned that we will all fit in two beds. Are roll aways available? Thanks,
thereuare Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 The pull-out is a double... the bed in the BR is a queen or double depending upon the room assignment. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
Lukester Posted July 20, 2005 Author Report Posted July 20, 2005 O.K. we pulled the trigger for three nights instead of four. Our thinking is if we still have money left and are having a good time, we'll negotiate with the hotel and stay one more day. Your link worked like a champ, got a double suite for $150 a night. I put in a request for a queen if it was available. With taxes, three nights turned out to be $539.34. Watch out NYC, here come the Griswolds! Thanks all for your help.
