Priceline Hotel: 3.5* New York City (Central Park South) Park Central New York

I am trying to find a hotel in Manhattan from 6/4 - 6/9.

My objective is to find the best accommodations I can for under $270 total per night that is convenient to a location in southern Chelsea.

From the transit maps I have found the 14 St station is perfect for my needs which means I can consider hotels along 8th Ave and 53rd St. From the Priceline zone maps I believe that means Chelsea, Madison Square Garden, Times Square, Midtown West, Midtown East, Central Park South, and Soho/Tribeca though not the entirety of those zones. I am not familiar with the city, but a 15 minute walk to the subway station would be fine as long as the walk stays in relatively safe areas.

Any assistance or advice general or specific is most welcome. I'm new to this.

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

When bidding on a particular zone, one has to be willing to stay anywhere within the zone; which zones would be acceptable in terms of staying anywhere within? Additionally, what would be your desired star rating?

Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Thanks so much for the help and the welcome. I think anywhere in Chelsea, Madison Square Garden, or Midtown West would be good. My desired star rating is 4. But the price of $270 per night (total after fees and tax) is the more important consideration. If I can get a nicer stay for that price that's great. If that's not an achievable amount for such accommodations then a lower rating is fine too.

I'm calculating your maximum bid to be ~$230/nite.

There are no 4* rated hotels currently offered by PRICELINE in the MSG zone, so using the zones you've mentioned above, you would only be bidding on Chelsea and MTW. Given rates are quite high for these dates, can I ask where specifically (cross streets if fine) you need to be in Chelsea? There may be a subway station nearby which could allow for inclusions of others areas should that most of any other zone(s) be convenient to the subway line that is near your desired location... or did you want to begin with only these two zones?

These are going to be expensive dates in the city, so if you're looking for "a deal" you would want to include as many zones that are acceptable as possible (giving the greatest number of hotels the ability to accept your bid), but as you know your reason/plans for coming to the city better than we do, i'm not sure how flexible you are in terms of including other areas.

I'm specifically looking to be convenient to 8th Avenue and W 16th St. According to the transit map I've been looking at, the 14th St station is right there on the A, C, and E lines. A and C run basically right up 8th Avenue, while E follows along and then turns at 53rd. I think Times Square, Central Park South, and Midtown East would all be fine as well.

I think these zones will be fine... some points within the zones won't be perfect, but given rates i'm seeing i think you need to be flexible as scoring a 4* hotel in any of these zones would be a fairly lucky feat for these dates.

So to confirm, you're bidding TS, CPS, MTE, MTW and Chelsea

To give it a try, at the 4* level in NYC you have SEVEN re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Many thanks for the advice. Everything until the end was rejected. If I'm willing to go up to 310 (including taxes and fees) should I pretty much just do this again in 24 hours at plus $40 dollars and skipping the bids at less than $230?

Posted

...skipping the bids at less than $230?

No, because if a hotel offers lower priced inventory between now and tomorrow, wouldn't you want a chance to win it for less? ;) (it's not a high probability, but it's certainly worth trying some lower bids again, imo)

If you let us know your maximum bid we'll revise accordingly.

No luck with that. If I lower to 3 stars would that same progression be the way to go?

Ah, obviously I need to use different rebidding zones at 3*.
Why are these dates so hard to get? What's happening this weekend? I'm about to start bidding for the same dates.
I have no idea.

Why move straight to 3* bidding... have you tried 3.5* bidding yet?

I haven't looked yet to see if it would help, but is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option?

If you lower to less than 4* you need to be aware:

MTE - some of the hotels in this zone at less than 4* can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway, is this acceptable?

CPS - had the Hudson Hotel, which while centrally located has notoriously small rooms (~140 sq. ft.), would this be acceptable?

MSG - close to your desired location, but one hotel in the zone is known for giving their small rooms to guests how have booked thru PRICELINE / HOTWIRE and other 3rd party websites

Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option?

For 6/7-6/9 HOTWIRE has a 4* hotel in the Chelsea zone for only $125/nite

4-star Hotel in Chelsea - Madison Square Garden

Fitness

Restaurant

Business

Hi-Speed Internet

Blind Accessible

Deaf Accessible

Travel Accessible

Room Accessible

Wheelchair Accessible

Bathroom Accessible

Roll-in Shower

My guess is that this may be the Doubletree Chelsea or the New Yorker Ramada Plaza

You'll still end up paying an exorbitant amount for 6/4-6/7, but at least this may help make spending much more for these nites more palatable, and/or make whatever 'concessions' you need to make for these first 3 nites a bit easier since it won't be for your entire stay.

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.

It's up to you whether you're willing to change hotels mid-stay or would prefer to move forward by lowering your star rating (which keep in mind that although the hotel above is 4* rated by HOTWIRE, the Doubletree is 3.5* rated by PRICELINE and the Ramada New Yorker is 3* rated... however, both are still a nice deal for these dates, imo). Let us know your thoughts and/or how it goes and we'll take it from there.

Were you able to jump on the $125 deal above... as it's no longer offered. If not, given the rock bottom rate is no longer available, do you want to next try SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID, lower your star rating, increase your maximum bid (or a combination of these three)?

I was unable to get that $125 deal. I am willing to split my stay, and lower my rating. I am also willing to cut down on the number of days in order to stay within the same total bid. This last is the least desirable option, but not totally unacceptable since I have a friend in the region I can stay with if need be.

I went through all of the steps for the full date range with no luck. I've begun splitting now. I had success at $230 for the Renaissance New York Hotel Times Square 26/7 - 6/9. Continuing on to try for the other nights.

Posted

Now I was able to book 6/4 - 6/6 at $330 for the Park Central New York hotel. That leaves 6/6 - 6/7 to book. My remaining budget is ~$230 which is just not going to happen in Manhattan. I will either stay with a friend or possibly stay in the City Center West neighborhood of Philadelphia. I had intended to spend one day there but not a night, but spending a night there and leaving for NY in the morning may be the best strategy.

Any advice on bidding for a hotel in City Center West, Philadelphia, PA 6/6 - 6/7 with a budget of $220?
