ttianshifu Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 Hi everyone,we will be visiting Washington DC for the first time, so I wanted to get your advice regarding which zones to choose. We do not have a car and want to visit the standard places for a first visit (Capitol, White house etc.). Of course it would be great to have a hotel nearby.I'd like to start with a 4* strategy up to $110. If unsuccessful, then a 3.5* strategy would work as well. Thanks in advance for your help!
thereuare Posted April 27, 2012 Report Posted April 27, 2012 At the moment you shouldn't have any issue getting a 4* hotel within your budget for these dates. However, the question is which zone(s) do you want to bid. The most frequently bid zones are:Convention Center - Capitol HillWhite House - DowntownDupont Circle - Woodley Park(then a distant 4th is the Georgetown area)The first two zones are generally considered 'downtown DC' but Dupont Cirlce is often bid as it's a nice 'suburb' just outside of the core DC area... a short metro ride (convenient to most hotels in this zone) to the sights and a lot of restaurants, bars, etc. in the immediate neighborhood which services the local residents. Some people LOVE dupont circle due to the environment, some prefer to be more on top of the sights. I mention Dupont Circle since it may or may not fit your own style (personally i love the type of environment as i prefer to be more among the 'people' of an area than the sights) but if you are interested in this area you may want to consider HOTWIRE which has what i believe to be the Hotel Palomar for $107/nite (4* Dupont Cirlce: Boutique, Restaurant, Fitness, Smoke Free, Hi-Speed Internet, Business). It's a boutique style hotel and gets GREAT reviews (4.5/5.0 at Tripadvisor). Assuming we're correct, the hotel is 2 blocks from the Dupont Circle metro which will have you into 'core DC' in short order and being a Kimpton property, they have an evening wine reception nightly which is a nice way to end the day or begin a nite out on the town. I do think you could get something within your budget in the other two zones, but i mention this since the reviews are so good and the Kimpton chain has such a good reputation.Let us know your thoughts and/or how you'd like to proceed (or how it goes of you take this HOTWIRE offer) and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. ttianshifu Posted May 2, 2012 Author Report Posted May 2, 2012 Hi,thanks a lot for your post!My english ist not bad (from my perspective), but what do you mean by "top of the sights"? Does this mean that @ Dupont Circle I would stay between the locals, whereas Convention Center and White House would be more "touristic" places, because it's closer to the different sights?thanks a lot again and hava great day
