ARA Posted May 20, 2012 Report Posted May 20, 2012 Hi all,I want to reserve a hotel in Buffalo for Jun 25 to 27 (two nights). I've been bidding for 4 days for a 3 star hotel (in zones 6, 4, 5 and 1) for max 50$ per night. Do you think I'll have more chance if I wait for the last moment or this price is too low and I need to change my bids anyway? Thanks
AaronJB Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)Please confirm the names of the zones (instead of zone numbers) and your desired max per night.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
ARA Posted May 21, 2012 Author Report Posted May 21, 2012 Thanks Z6: Niagara Falls, NYZ4: East Niagara Falls, NYZ5: Grand IslandZ1: Buffalo - AmherstI'm trying to find a 3* hotel with 50$ per night, I'll consider hotels with less stars (2.5 and 2) with the lower or at most the same price.I also noticed a weird thing. For a 3* hotel e.g. in Z1 priceline says: "Median retail price for a 3 star hotel in the area selected is $98." but for 2.5* it says: "Median retail price for a 2
Romelle Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 I also noticed a weird thing. For a 3* hotel e.g. in Z1 priceline says: "Median retail price for a 3 star hotel in the area selected is $98." but for 2.5* it says: "Median retail price for a 2½ star hotel in the area selected is $165." !!Those "median retail" prices are sort of a mystery. There doesn't seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason to them usually. Usual advice is to just ignore them.RomellePS - if you look at the Hotwire rates, you will see you are generally in the right ballpark. You may have to try a little lower star rating. Or maybe try a couple more zones, assuming they would work for you. Hotwire has a 3* at the airport for $57.PPS - the reason for listing zones by name is that Priceline adds and deletes and adjusts zones regularly. When this happens, the zones move up and down in their line and their numbers change accordingly.
ARA Posted May 21, 2012 Author Report Posted May 21, 2012 Thanks. My question is does it basically the case that if I wait for a couple of weeks I will have better chance to find a good hotel?
Romelle Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 Thanks. My question is does it basically the case that if I wait for a couple of weeks I will have better chance to find a good hotel? There is good discussion about timing in the PRICELINE FAQ, but the quick answer is - one never knows. Prices can go either way or stay the same.Usually the best tactic is to just bid to your comfortable budget when further out (as you are doing). Then push into uncomfortable levels (more $$), or reduce your star levels, or try more distant zones when you start running short on time.Alternatively, you can make the cancelable back-up reservation and then try for the last minute bargain.
