fred33 Posted May 16, 2012 Report Posted May 16, 2012 I looked at your Priceline Maps for getting an idea about prices in Boston downtown for an August weekend (Friday 8/24 - Sunday 8/27): they seem much lower than the ones currently shown on HOTWIRE! It is true that I am looking for a room for 2 adults and 2 kids but still I am a bit puzzled by the difference. All central hotels but one in the convention centre area - an area which I am not convinced about - are above 170$.Is it likely prices will drop (to at least 130-140$ say)? Or should I rather go ahead and book in a less central location? Thanks in advance for any advice!
thereuare Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 For the size of the city, Boston does not have very many hotels rooms, and even a moderately sized event could have a substantial effect on room rates. I'm not aware of anything special on these specific dates, but there could certainly be something i'm not aware of that is driving up hotel rates, although rates don't see that out of line to 'normal summertime' to me. There is a cruise ship arriving/departing on Aug 24th and this may be effecting rates a little as some users disembarking may stay the nite in the area to explore Boston, but i think the bigger difference is that you're comparing PRICELINE rates (which is usually a little cheaper to begin with) to quad occupancy on HOTWIRE... the difference between double occupancy and quad occupancy in any city can be substantial.Nobody can say if rates will come down, or move even higher, between now and your trip, but if you really don't like anything offered at the moment then with 3+ months to go before your trip i would book a fully refundable back-up (see MAPS and HOTELS.com and check the cancellation policy) and continue to search in the days and weeks ahead. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know if any questions regarding the above and let us know how we can be of further help along the way. fred33 Posted May 26, 2012 Author Report Posted May 26, 2012 Thank you very much for the advice. I booked a fully refundable room at Sheraton (8/23-8/26 for 2 adults + 2 kids) with Starwood's "birthday rate promotion": I actually got a great rate of about 140$ per night and so I will most likely stick to it. In case I end up booking something else, I will report.Again many thanks.
