This will be my first trip to NYC and we'll be coming into the city by bus. My friend and I would like to get a hotel near to Penn Station (where the bus drops us) but we will also be attending a concert in Brooklyn on the 6/12. We're college students so our budget is tight. We're looking to spend up to $150/night for a hotel.

Few questions in order to best advise...

Why plan your hotel stay near where the bus stop... better to plan your trip around the best combination of hotel deal and location, as opposed to your arrival/departure point. I'd suggest including the areas around Penn Station, but not restrict yourself to just this one location.

What is the minimum star rating you're seeking for this trip?

Is either of you over 21 years old? Over 18 years old?

Let us know the above and we'll take it from there.

Thanks for for your help!

We're looking for at least a 3-star hotel and yes we're both over 21.

I was advised to pick something near the drop off point (in Manahattan I believe) but as long as we can get around from our arrival/departure point, and the concert easily (I'm guessing subway) then I'd be happy.

Well it's your stay so you should pick something that you (and your friend) will be happy with, but if you're looking for the best deal, i don't think it makes much sense to choose a hotel based upon pick-up/drop-off location, especially when mass transit in NYC is so easily accessible.

At the 3* level most find MTE, MTW, CPS, TS, ESB and MSG to be well located, but i'll also add Chelsea to the mix since it's a 'young' area that you would probably like and not too far from Penn Station, with the following caveats for some of these zones:

CPS - has the Hudson Hotel which is well located but has notoriously small rooms (~140 square feet)... would this be acceptable?

MTE - some of the hotels can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway (of the zones above this would likely be the further travel time to Penn Station... although still not really too bad, imo)

MSG - there is at least one hotel that gives PRICELINE / 3rd party customers the worst rooms in the hotel... they're still clean and such, but are much smaller than the rest of the rooms at the property. Would this be acceptable?

Chelsea - can be a 10 minute walk to the subway, but as per above, i think you'd "fit in" in this neighborhood given your age demographics

Let us know your thoughts and we'll take it from there.
