Priceline Hotel: HELP with 3 or 3.5* MSG area

Hi,

I have friends who are staying at the New Yorker on 34th and 8th these days and I wanted to find a hotel close by. I bid upto $165 on 3.5 and $125 on a 3*. I'd like to stay in this general area, but am open to going a little bit further out. What do you recommend? I'd really like to not spend more than $150 a night if possible.

I used the links as well as your strategy when I was bidding. I'm just trying to get some help and advice on what to do. I'm not sure if I'm not getting my bids accepted because of the MSG area?

It's difficult to get a great deal in NYC when focussing on just one zone. There is only one 'known' 3.5* property reported to the board in this zone so (although there can be other 3.5* properties not yet reported to the board) there has historically only been one 'active' participating at the 3.5* level... so by only bidding this one zone at the 3.5* level you're only giving one hotel the opportunity to accept your bid. While at the 3* level there are numerous hotels reported to the board, $125 is not likely near enough for this particular nite.

Ultimately it comes down to budget vs. location. Generally speaking you're likely looking at ~$160-$180 for a 3* hotel in the nearby area (MSG, Chelsea)... if you're willing to 'flare out' a bit more you may be looking at ~$150-$170.

I'll also mention, just in case you're interested, that what appears to be the W Hoboken can likely be had for ~$110-$125 for these nites. The PATH train to 33rd St will leave you off about one avenue from the New Yorker... certainly not as convenient as staying directly in Manhattan, but if budget is a primary concern, you could likely make this work (and it's a great hotel).
