Hello

Im visiting NYC in the summer and wanted to book through priceline bidding and I can use your help.

I'm staying for 2 nights, July 18-20.

My budget is $120-$160 for each night.

I would like to stay in manhattan, and dont mind Financial District, Soho, lower east side, chelsea, empire state building, madison square gardem, midtown east or west, times square, hells kitchen, central park south

So what area do you suggest I can get the cheapest and at which price should I start bidding??

Posted

Well I was hoping 4 star but as long as i can get for $160 or less. My goal is to get the best thing I can for $160 or under.

If I couldn't get that then maybe Ill settle for 3.5 star

I checked Travelocity and found these two 4 star hotels through normal booking:

Ace hotel $194

Eurostars $210

And priceline is showing 2 hotels that are under $240 p/night., both 4 star

So since there are 4 star hotels with normal rate in that range, then I think priceline bidding should accept for $150 since thats less than 40% off the normal price, and they claim to give 60% off with bidding.

What do you think?

The exact phrase on PRICELINE is "up to 60% off". Very critical two little words in there. I've even seen better discounts, although it is really rare. In high seasons it tends to be less. Sometimes much less. I've seen people happy with 10% off when that was the very best they could do.

ok thanks for that tip

I tried starting at $120 until $160 and was rejected on all of them.

What do you think I should do now?? Try 3.5 or 3 star?

Posted

If I make a bid lets say at 12 pm, and then at 2 pm rebid by adding a free rebid zone (without a 4 star hotel).

Then when does the 24 hour end for me to be able to rebid on my original areas excluding the free rebid zone? is at 12pm next day or 2pm?

Posted

If you are rejected for a specific bid (4* MTE, for example), you cannot make that specific bid again for 24 hours after the time the bid was rejected.

Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

ok i started bidding on 3.5 star

something very weird happened

I selected madison square garden area and it said median price for this area is $227

so i got rejected

then i used a free rebid zone, long island city since its highest star is 3

but as soon as I added long island the median went down to $171

why did that happen??? if there is no 3.5 star in long island why did the median for 3.5 star go down?

Im afraid it might get me a hotel in long island?

Posted

As long as you checked Long Island City for star availability higher than 3 JUST BEFORE you bid, and verified there was nothing, you can't get a Long Island hotel when bidding 3.5*s.

The way PRICELINE calculates that "median" number is sort of a mystery. There may be some logic to it, but one is better simply ignoring it.

Romelle

PS- I did just check, and Long Island City doesn't have anything higher than 3*s right now. You were wise to ask the question though. In other areas, bidders have missed a "Resort" offering at the bottom of the star list. Resorts fall between 4* and 5* and act like 4.5*s. Phoenix, Las Vegas and other places.

When bidding 3.5* in NYC do note:

MTE - some hotels can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway

CPS - has the Hudson Hotel which has notoriously small rooms

MSG - becomes eligible for bidding (but also contains the Affinia Manhattan, which generally gets good reviews, but there have been some reports of PRICELINE / HOTWIRE / 3rd party booking guests getting the least favorable rooms in the property, which are sub-par to the 'standard' rooms)

If you'd like help with a bidding strategy please confirm the zones you're willing to accept and your maximum bid and we'll advise accordingly.

These are the zones that I dont mind

Financial District, Soho, lower east side, chelsea, empire state building, madison square garden, midtown east or west, times square, hells kitchen

I dont want to take the chance of getting the hudson hotel so I wont include CPS

My max bid for 3.5 star is $160

Hotwire is offering 4 star for $180, so I dont want to go higher than $160 for 3.5 star
