I'm in the process of planning a mom/son trip with my 11-year old. Earlier today, I had a successful priceline bid ($120) for Mark Hopkins Intercontinental for the first 3 nights of a 6 night stay. I was offered the option to extend the stay, but at a price of $168/nt, so I declined. I'm looking for advice on which areas would be good to bid on to finish our stay. It looks like I may have to increase my bid a little, but I still don't want to go much higher than 125/nt. I know we will be going to a Giants game either Sunday afternoon or Monday so maybe hotels closer to AT&T park for convenience or maybe even Fisherman's Wharf for the touristy activities there? I'm open to other ideas as well. Thanks for your help.

I actually added USW in last and raised my bid from $115 to $120 at that time. I started at $85 or $90 for USE and rebid at $5 increments adding in all non-4 star areas and Financial District. I left it for a couple of hours before coming back and adding in USW at $120.

You don't want to add a 'live' zone at the end of your bidding like you did as you risk an overbid in that zone. However, let's figure out a plan for your future bidding and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow...

If you've already bid up to $120 in your preferred zones, and your maximum bid is $125, you're not leaving much margin for success... if you prefer the USW and USE zone over any others i would first bid up to $125 (although i think about the $140$160 area is the more likely figure you'll need to be closer to in order to be successful), then consider other zones.

If you want to consider other zones, besides USE and USW, Financial District-Embarcadero, SOMA-Moscone Center, and Fisherman's Wharf are frequently bid area and i would look at those zones to see if any of these are convenient for your plans as well (although note that no 4* hotels are offered in the the FW zone thru PRICELINE)

Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly.

The areas I would prefer are (1) USE (2) Financial Dist/Emb (3) USW and (4) SOMA. I think I really want to stick with 4 star so I guess not FW. I have awhile so maybe a strategy where I could try to stay under 125 initially and maybe increase as it gets really close. Should I book a back up with the ability to cancel or am I far enough out to not worry with that yet?

Booking a fully refundable back-up is always a good idea as it protects you from any rate increases while you continue to bid, and it can often help, but never hurt, so nothing to lose by doing so. (please check our Support Page and/or MAPS and HOTELS.com for your back-up reservation options)

For your 4* bidding, did you want to stick with USE and USW or have you decided that any of the 4 zones above are acceptable?

Let us know and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

When bidding 4* in San Francisco you have SEVEN re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select 4* USE, USW, Financial, SOMA...

Bid $90, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $95, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $125

Any questions feel free to ask.

I got the Marriott San Francisco Marquis (SOMA) for $117/night. I followed your strategy starting at $90 and rebidding with non 4-stars up to $110. On my last rebid, I went up by $7 and added in another non 4-star area and got it. I am happy with the results and looking forward to the trip I used the PRICELINE link from betterbidding. Thanks for your help.
