OneTwoThreeFour Posted April 12, 2012 Report Posted April 12, 2012 Hi AllFirst post! I was hoping to get some advice on booking a hotel room for one night, for two people on May 18th. Details are:One double room for two peopleMax budget USD250 (preferably lower)Star rating - as high as possible! We are driving in from New England, will drop our hire car off and go meet some friends for dinner in Manhattan. We fly back to Europe the next day however for fairly ridiculous reasons we are flying back from different airports so I don't think that is a factor. Overall fairly open on location but somewhere not to hard to drop a car off coming from NE and not too far from mid-town east would be good.We had consider one in Brooklyn (not really sure if this meets my criteria above!) with the following details - €250, 3.5*, 4.5 tripadvisor rating hotel (complementary breakfast, no smoking, business centre, high-speed internet, kitchenette). I was struggling to identify it so first question is if anyone knows what it is?Second question is whether anyone has other recommendations e.g. better location or price? Many thanks1234
thereuare Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 Welcome to BetterBidding! Please change the currency drop down menu on the top right of HOTWIRE's page to US Dollars (and if applicable the country to United States). Then continue to search HOTWIRE and post to the board in US Dollars so that rates are consistent and not subject to interpretation due to future currency fluctuation. Once you're ready to purchase simply change the drop down menu to whatever currency you'd like to use and complete your purchase. Then reply to this thread with the room rate per nite in US Dollars and we'll have a closer look at your post above. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Thanks. OneTwoThreeFour Posted April 13, 2012 Author Report Posted April 13, 2012 Hi thereuareSorry my mistake - the figures quoted in my original email were in USD - I put in the euro sign by mistake. So the hotel I mention above is $250 NOT €250.Teach me to post late at night1234
thereuare Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 We are driving in from New England, will drop our hire car off and go meet some friends for dinner in Manhattan.Where do you need to drop-off the rental? OneTwoThreeFour Posted April 13, 2012 Author Report Posted April 13, 2012 Where do you need to drop-off the rental? We haven't booked a car yet - we were planning to go the other way round and book a hotel first then choose the rental afterwards.Where do you fly out from the following day?My wife if flying from Newark and I fly from JFK.
thereuare Posted April 14, 2012 Report Posted April 14, 2012 Since you considered Brooklyn, how about staying in Jersey City-Hoboken?You can get a very nice 4* hotel for less than $170/nite and commute to Manhattan via the PATH train (~15 minutes to midtown)... this would be much cheaper than the ~$250 you're likely looking at to for a 3* or better hotel directly in Manhattan. Also, not sure how much a car rental will be from Boston to NYC, but you'll likely pay a substantial premium for a one-way rental. If you're not aware, there is train service between these two areas (unfortunately it's not that cheap) OR there is cheap non-stop bus service between the two cities (cost anywhere for $1-$40 depending upon how far in advance you purchase your tickets). If you're not interested in either of these options and prefer to drive, you could park your car on the street in Jersey City/Hoboken and then one of you drive the car to the airport the next day while the other takes taxi/mass transit to their own airport.Thoughts/questions?Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. OneTwoThreeFour Posted April 14, 2012 Author Report Posted April 14, 2012 Thanks again for all your help.Since you considered Brooklyn, how about staying in Jersey City-Hoboken?Would be happy to consider Hoboken. A quick search threw up a 4*for $177 in "Hoboken - Jersey City - North Bergen". However I think you suggested in another post that it was probably the Sheraton which wasn't near the PATH? That was all I could find for my dates. Also, not sure how much a car rental will be from Boston to NYC, but you'll likely pay a substantial premium for a one-way rental. We're actually planning to do this on the way out - we're getting a train to New Haven and then hiring from there. However the company I am looking at only charges ~$30 more to drop back off in New York.
OneTwoThreeFour Posted April 14, 2012 Author Report Posted April 14, 2012 Also if I am still considering Brooklyn does anyone have any ideas on:$250, 3.5*, 4.5 tripadvisor rating (complementary breakfast, no smoking, business centre, high-speed internet, kitchenette)or$145, 2.5*, 3.5 tripadvisor rating (free parking, complementary breakfast, free internet, fitness centre, high-speed internet)
thereuare Posted April 14, 2012 Report Posted April 14, 2012 Searching HOTWIRE for 2adults/0children i'm seeing a 4* hotel in Hoboken-Jersey City for $149 with a 95% approval rating which i suspect is the Westin or Hyatt (i'd slightly favor this being the Westin vs the Hyatt). However, if you bid in PRICELINE their zone doesn't currently include the Sheraton and all the 'known' 4* hotels are close to a PATH station. Is there a reason you want to rent a car from New Haven to Manhattan or is there a big cost savings vs. taking the train directly into Grand Central as staying on the train would likely be the easiest option and no worries about the traffic you could potentially hit along that route.HOTWIRE has added some new amenities lately so there are no previous reports for the Brooklyn properties and i don't have any insight as to which one(s) these may be, but as i've often started on the board i'll reiterate that i like the Waterfront area of Jersey City MUCH better than Brooklyn. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know what you decide to do for this stay or if we can be of further help. OneTwoThreeFour Posted April 14, 2012 Author Report Posted April 14, 2012 Thanks thereuare - really appreciate your help.Could I check exactly what criteria you are using to search hotwire? I am searching one night on 18th May, 1 room, 2 adults with location "Hoboken, NJ" and cannot see anything for $149.To explain our plans a bit more. I am in New York on work at the start of May. After that my wife is joining me and we are getting a train to New Haven, staying one night there and then hiring a car and driving around New England for a week. We are hiring the car in New Haven rather than New York in part because it's easy to get to New Haven from New York by train and in part because it seems to be cheaper. Dropping the car off in New York rather than New Haven at the end doesn't seem to cost that much more.
AaronJB Posted April 14, 2012 Report Posted April 14, 2012 When searching for 5/18 only for 2 adults, I'm seeing a 4* in the Hoboken zone for $149 w/free internet, smoke-free, internet, restaurant, business, fitness. The price you see may vary slightly.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Dropping the car off in New York rather than New Haven at the end doesn't seem to cost that much more.Traffic on this route can be hit or miss, which if not much cost difference i'd favor the train....New Haven, staying one night there...I'd head to Pepe's Pizza for your one meal in New Haven... it's a well known institution (so expect a line and a wait).157 Wooster StreetNew Haven, CT 06511203-865-5762 Do you see the HOTWIRE property now? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. OneTwoThreeFour Posted April 15, 2012 Author Report Posted April 15, 2012 Thanks everyone!Searching again I can see a hotel in the area "Hoboken - Jersey City - North Bergen area hotel" for $147. Is that the right area?
thereuare Posted April 15, 2012 Report Posted April 15, 2012 Yes, that is the correct area... does it show a 95% recommendation from previous guests and Restaurant, Fitness, Smoke Free, Free Internet, Hi-Speed Internet, Business? This is the one we're referring to and best guess is the Westin. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know how it goes or if we can be of further help.
