Also 1st time NY visitor - is central preferrable to Midtown East?

The Sofitel has been previously seen with this amenity set, so that would be my guess. Personally, I think MTC is an excellent area to stay, although nearby MTE is also quite nice (I'd also recommend ESB.)

NYC is so compact, and mass transit usually readily available, there is little difference between most of the midtown zones.

Thanks for your replies. There is a similar property listed on Expedia's blind bidding for $283. Same area, same 4.5 stars and amenities. I understand that Hotwire is owned by Expedia. Would it be a safe bet that it is the same hotel (likely the Sofitel)?

Possibly but not necessarily.

Expedia's 'opaque' hotels use a different star rating system than HOTWIRE, so this could be the same hotel or a different property. If there was a very unique amenity shown for this property, or a combination of amenities that aren't often seen together, then it would be more likely that these are the same property, but with the very common amenity combination above, there is no way to know if this is the same or a different property.
