I'm an apparel buyer so I have been to NYC many many many times and I have stayed in tons of the hotels listed on Priceline. For what it is worth: - I really like the Hudson Hotel even though the rooms are very very small. If you are young and hip and not terribly big (I'm 5"8 and my knees hit the bathroom sink when I am on the toilet!), the hotel has a great vibe that is absolutely worth the tradeoff of the smaller room space. I've often stayed there when I had 2 or 3 large duffel bags of sample clothing and I was able to make it all fit. I know people don't seem to like that hotel on this forum, but I think it is quite a fun place. - I've also read several postings where people were willing to book hotels way outside of their desired areas just to save $10 or $20/night. I understand this is sometimes a necessity, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. Visits to NY are filled with long days that are jam packed with activities; I have found it really nice to stay in a central location where I can pop back to my room for 30mins to brush my teeth, drop off some bags, or change my socks. If you can afford it, I think you should spend your money on a better location rather than on transportation costs.
